Barbara Lindeman has worked in education abroad for 20 years. She holds a Master of Science (MS) in student development with an emphasis in adolescent and adult counseling from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale and bachelor's degree in English from Northwestern College (Orange City, Iowa). Lindeman moved to Columbia from Washington, D.C., where she worked as Assistant Director of Study Abroad at Georgetown University.

Barbara serves in a several leadership positions in the field of education abroad. She is the curricular dean of the NAFSA: Association of International Educators Core Education Program workshop "Safety and Responsibility in Education Abroad" and developed the health and safety section for the NAFSA workshop "Toolkit for Small Offices" in 2007. She is a frequent speaker on health and safety issues in education abroad and has authored several publications for NAFSA: Association of International Educators, including Best Practices in Addressing Mental Health Issues Affecting Education Abroad Participants. She is a member and past chair of the NAFSA Education Abroad Subcommittee on Health and Safety (1998-present) and a member of the Interassociational Task Force on Health and Safety in Study Abroad. She is active in the Forum on Education Abroad and has completed the Forum's QUIP Peer Review Training. She also serves on the National Advisory Council for Arcadia University's College of Global Studies, and the IFSA-Butler National Advisory Board.

Barbara has studied, worked and traveled extensively in Asia and Africa and also throughout Europe, Latin America, and the Middle East. is proficient in Mandarin Chinese, and also speaks French (intermediate) and Spanish (intermediate).
