From Tibet to Tiananmen Square: Religion and Politics in Modern China - May 6.
Protests from Paris to San Francisco and from Budapest to Sydney both supporting and decrying the Chinese government's relationship with Tibet have prompted international media coverage on and controversy over an already charged subject: politics and religion. If anything, high profile demonstrations at American universities such as Duke, Cornell, and the University of Washington have only made it more clear that this is not only an important issue on campuses across the nation, but that is it is a powerfully divisive subject that many Americans do not fully understand. Come learn more about the role of religion in modern China and its relationship with politics at this event on May 6 at 4:00 p.m. in 104 A&S. Religious studies chair Philip Clart and Chinese program coordinator Michael Volz will give a short talk on the subject followed by a discussion of current events. Refreshments will be served. Sponsored by the Association for Chinese Language and Culture, the Friendship Association of Chinese Students and Scholars, and the Chinese Business Student Association.
