Recruiting

International recruiting information for departments

As a land-grant research university, the University of Missouri attracts a large number of outstanding professors and researchers.

Truman with administrators.MU departments may learn during the selection process that some their applicants are in non-immigrant status in the United States (F-1, J-1 or H-1B visa status). If a chosen candidate is in non-immigrant status, MU will sponsor this individual for a non-immigrant work visa (H-1B). To remain in the United States for an indefinite period, the international scholar must obtain permanent residency. Time limits are placed on the duration of stay for all non-immigrant categories.

A recruitment process that meets the requirements imposed by the U.S. Department of Labor guidelines for foreign labor certification will help ensure that the employment-based permanent residency application process goes smoothly.

The MU International Center can review a department's job description and selection methods. An adviser is available to meet with potential candidates in the final phases of the interview, identifying potential problems with any future immigration status and familiarizing the candidates with the International Center's services.

Recruiting for permanent positions that include teaching components

The International Center provides permanent-residency services only to candidates who qualify for employment-based second category (EB-2) visas and who also are eligible for special recruitment procedures for college and university teachers under 20 CFR 656.18.

There are special advertising requirements for department recruiting for faculty positions that include teaching responsibilities. Please check with the scholar coordinator regarding these requirements.

Departments must keep track of all other recruitment sources used. MU has an internal system that tracks recruitment steps (eRecruit), and departments also must keep track of all venues used for recruitment and all candidates who apply. A special report on competitive recruitment is required by the Department of Labor. More information:  Permanent Residence Step 1: Permanent Labor Certification.

The recruitment advertisement should include the following elements:

  1. Name of the employer (University of Missouri).
  2. Job location (Columbia, Missouri).
  3. Job title.
  4. Degree required and area of specialization.
  5. Policy about hiring all-but-dissertation candidates — candidates who have completed their comprehensive exams but not their dissertations (ABD).
  6. Job duties and requirements (e.g. "Assistant professor, sociology. Teaching, research and service. Requires PhD in sociology or related field.")
  7. Where/how to apply for the position.

The International Center can review the advertisement to ensure all required elements are included.
