Social Security card applications

The process of obtaining a Social Security card has become more complicated in recent years because of heightened security precautions. H-1B scholars must now wait two full weeks from their date of entry into the U.S. before applying for a card at the Social Security office in Columbia.

Applications that are submitted earlier than two weeks after the arrival date will be subject to additional delays of six weeks to three months. Applying early will significantly increase the time it will take for a scholar to receive a Social Security number (SSN).

The hosting MU department does not need an SSN to begin employing an international scholar. The scholars can receive wages and benefits temporarily before obtaining the number. Any departmental questions regarding this administrative process should be referred to the International Center.
