Completing a program
Completion of studies occurs when you have finished your academic program or your I-20/DS-2019 expires, whichever happens first. After completing your studies at MU, you have five options:
1. Leave the U.S.
- F-1 students have up to 60 days to leave.
- J-1 students have up to 30 days to leave.
2. Continue your studies at MU
- F-1 students have up to 60 days to change their level and/or program at MU.
- J-1 students must change their level and/or program before completing their studies.
- If you are a sponsored international student, your sponsor might need to transfer your SEVIS record before you can continue your studies.
- If you change funding or pursue a new objective, you might need to leave the United Staets before continuing your studies at MU.
3. Transfer to a different school
4. Start working
- F-1 students must apply for OPT before the end of their 60-day grace period. Note: We recommend that students apply three months before they expect to start their employment.
- J-1 students must request academic training before completing their studies.
- Sponsored international students should check with their sponsors concerning their eligibility to work.
5. Change to another visa status
- F-1 students must apply for a change of status within 60 days of completing their studies.
- J-1 students must apply for a change of status before completing their studies.
If you are not sure which option is best for you, meet with an adviser to discuss your situation.
