Transfer from MU to another school

Conditions of Eligibility

  1. The student must be maintaining status at MU.
  2. The course of study at the new transfer-in school must begin within 5 months of the end of the course of study at MU, or the release date set by MU, whichever is earlier.
  3. The student must be eligible for an I-20 at the new transfer-in school.
  4. The proper transfer procedures must be followed, meeting the required deadlines.

Steps for transferring to another school

  1. You are admitted to a new school and you decide that you absolutely want to attend that school.
  2. You complete and submit the transfer authorization form.

    Transfer Date:
    • The date you transfer schools is called your "release date."
    • As of this date, you will no longer be considered an MU student.
    • The date must be between the end of the semester at MU and the beginning of the next semester at the new school.
    • The date must be prior to 60 days after the completion date of your program or optional practical training.
    • Know that your employment authorization will be affected by your transfer date.
  3. An International Center adviser will submit your transfer request to SEVIS.
  4. On your release date, SEVIS electronically transfers your SEVIS record to your new school through the SEVIS database.
  5. The new school will be able to give you a new I-20 on or after your release date.
  6. Report to the international student office at the new school by the program start date listed on the new I-20.

Note: If you are traveling, you must use the I-20 from the new school when you re-enter the U.S. If you are concerned that you might not get your new I-20 before you leave the U.S., please contact the Designated School Official (DSO), or international student adviser, at the new school.
