The centerpiece of the Global Scholars Program as envisioned by the Council on International Initiatives is the summer seminars. Every summer each of MU's ten colleges/schools with undergraduate teaching responsibilities may nominate two faculty to participate in one of two international seminars. Each of the international seminars is organized by a faculty member with expertise on the region.
Four specific priorities guide the summer seminar component of Global Scholars:
- Selecting timely, country-specific and academically appropriate themes for each seminar.
- Examining which of MU's partner universities overseas have the infrastructure, faculty and administrative support to deliver a meaningful scholarly experience and to facilitate faculty-to-faculty contacts over a wide range of academic disciplines.
- Further refining the potential host-country pool based on the availability of MU faculty with a relationship with the partner university, significant knowledge of the host country and the vigor and ability to lead a faculty group abroad.
- Requiring faculty participants to submit course outlines demonstrating that international content has been integrated into the curriculum.
