The International Center seeks community members from all walks of life to take part in the American LIFE program.

American LIFE is a flexible program to help Columbia and Mid-Missouri residents get to know and make friends with MU international students. International students come to the University of Missouri with the common goal of pursuing an education. Beyond that, every student is unique. Imagine the overwhelming feeling that living in a foreign country can evoke. That is where the LIFE program comes in. An estimated 80% of international students never set foot in an American home during their stay in the U.S. We aim to help decrease that statistic, one student at a time.

The LIFE program provides international students with an opportunity to experience American culture, while making friends and gaining a sense of community while here at MU. This truly unique opportunity not only adds to the students' experiences; it also opens the eyes and minds of American friendship partners who may not otherwise have had the opportunity to learn about different cultures and countries. By forming friendships with an international student, American friends are helping to alleviate loneliness and transition anxieties that students often have.

Frequently Asked Questions:

How often do the friendship partners meet with the international student? Once a month is recommended. There is no required amount of time, however.

What types of activities should we do with our international student?

  • At some point, invite your student to your home
  • Take your student to your usual activities, such as school events, sporting events, shopping, outings, etc.
  • Attend special events in the area, such as art fairs, the Twilight Festival, a University Concert Series event, etc.
  • Invite your student to your home for a holiday or special occasion.
  • Other activities of mutual interest.

What do we NOT need to do?

  • You do NOT need to provide housing for your student.
  • You do NOT need to provide financial help for your student.
  • You do NOT need to provide legal and/or immigration advice.
  • You do NOT need to help with serious emotional or health problems.
  • You should NOT necessarily expect your student to agree with your religious, political, or other beliefs. This does not mean you should avoid talking about these subjects if they come up in conversation. However, please understand that differences in worldviews are inevitable.

How long does this commitment last? We ask that you meet regularly with your student during his/her first semester at MU. The friendship may continue after that, but we feel the first semester is the most critical.

Is there any sort of orientation to prepare me to be a friendship partner? Currently there are no orientation sessions scheduled.
