If a visiting scholar's DS-2019 is expiring soon and you plan to extend, a request for extension should be made to the ISSS office (note: this information is not applicable to J-1 students). The department must complete the J-1 Exchange Visitor Request Form and pay the MU International Scholar Fee.
After you have submitted the request form, please give us 8 days to complete the extension. As soon as the DS-2019 is signed, your program is extended.
Important points to remember:
- J-1 Research Scholars have a maximum of 5 years to be in this status. This refers to total time so if you have transferred programs from another institution, the time at that institution counts toward the 5 years.
- All J-1 visa holders are required to have health insurance for the entire time they are in J status. This includes all dependents. This insurance must meet the requirements set forth by the State Department and is required by law. Not having health insurance causes you to be in violation of your J Visa.
- Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months past the beginning date you are requesting on the extension.
- For questions regarding extensions and their impact on travel, please contact a advisor.
Please contact the ISSS Scholar Coordinator if you have any questions. We would be happy to help you.
