Initial Expenses
The amount of money to bring with you depends on your particular situation. The information below is only to be used as a guide. You may wish to consult with the various international organizations at MU to learn about other possible expenses.
However, here are some initial expenses to consider:
- Pocket money - It is always wise to carry some cash with you in case you want to get something to eat or need to pay for a taxi while traveling. Otherwise, please do not carry large amounts of cash with you. Most students find that carrying a combination of cash (about $200) and traveler's checks is most helpful.
- Hotel - It will cost approximately $45-70 per night to stay in a decent hotel.
- Apartment - In order to sign a lease for an apartment, you will most likely be required to pay both the first month's rent, plus a security deposit, often the same amount as one month's rent. The amount of the rent can vary widely - from $200 for a bedroom in a shared apartment or $300-$400 for a 1-bedroom or $400-$500 for a 2-bedroom apartment. Check out the information about off-campus housing in Columbia to get an idea of what apartments cost.
- Utilities - If your utilities (electricity, gas, phone, etc.) are not included in your monthly rent, you may be required to open accounts with the local utility companies. This typically requires a deposit, current deposits estimates are: $40-Electricity, $15-Water, $10-Sewer, $10-Refuse, $40-Gas.
- Furnishings - If your apartment is not furnished, you will have to buy some essentials. The amount you spend will vary on what you choose to buy, but some expenses will be unavoidable.
- Educational Fees - Once you have registered for classes, you will be required to pay one third of what you owe on your total bill by mid-February. If you have not made this payment by the deadline, your classes will be dropped. More information about payment options and deadlines is available from the Cashier's Office.
- Books - You will be required to purchase certain books for each class at the University of Missouri-Columbia bookstore. You will spend $200-$300 (or more) per semester on books.
Setting up a bank account
A representative from a local bank will be at orientation to help you set up a bank account in Columbia. To open an account, you will need proof of your identity such as a passport. More information is available on their website.
