MU has a mandatory International Accident and Sickness Insurance policy for international students (plan highlights Adobe PDF Document, full policy brochure Adobe PDF Document). All international students with student ID numbers 741000 and above are automatically enrolled in the insurance policy upon academic enrollment each semester. Note that the health insurance policy is optional for international students with student ID numbers 740999 and below.

Optional Practical Training/Academic Training (OPT/AT) participants are not automatically enrolled and must enroll through the International Center. A student on OPT/AT can obtain an enrollment form from the International Center, fill it out and submit it directly to the insurance company.

On-line enrollment in the health insurance is not available for international students. An international student, though, may use the on-line process to enroll in the dental plan. Enrollment in the dental plan is voluntary. If you choose to enroll in the dental plan, you must select the International Indemnity Dental Plan option.

Insurance Waiver

Exceptions from enrollment in the mandatory insurance may be granted only when you demonstrate comparable health coverage in one of the following situations:

  • You have health insurance through a government-sponsored insurance program
  • You have health insurance through a spouse/family insurance plan provided by MU or another higher education institution
  • You have health insurance as a full time employee(for example students on OPT, CPT or Academic Training)
  • You are a J-1 student not enrolled in coursework, with insurance coverage that meets the minimum requirements.

In order to obtain a waiver, you must complete an Accident and Sickness Insurance Waiver Form Adobe PDF Document, attach a copy of your alternate insurance card and submit the form to the International Center within 30 days of the start date of the fall or winter semester. We will not waive the mandatory insurance if the waiver form was submitted after the deadline.

Insurance for Dependents

Eligible students and Optional Training/Academic Training participants enrolled in the health insurance may enroll their eligible dependents. Eligible dependents include:

  • spouses who reside with the insured student
  • unmarried children of the insured student who are under 23 years of age and are not self-supporting

A dependent must enroll for the same period of health insurance coverage as the student or within 30 days of the date the dependent entered the U.S. To enroll a dependent, please go to the Office of Cashiers.

A newborn child can be enrolled within 30 days from his/her birth date. Enrollment of a newborn can be completed through the Office of Cashiers during the enrollment period (within 30 days of the start date of the fall or winter semester). After the enrollment period deadline, you must contact Aetna directly at (877) 375-7905 to enroll your newborn child.
