J-1 Student Health Insurance Requirements

As a J-1 student, you and your J-2 dependents are required to have medical insurance in effect in J-status for the duration of your program. At MU, if you are in student status and enrolled for course work, you will be automatically billed for health insurance coverage that meets the J-1 requirements.

J-1 students who are not enrolled in course work, but are still under the MU Exchange Visitor Program sponsorship, may elect to obtain alternate coverage through a non-MU insurance provider as long as it meets the following minimum coverage criteria:

Minimum coverage - insurance shall cover (1) medical benefits of at least $50,000 per person per accident or illness; (2) repatriation of remains in the amount of $7,500; and (3) expenses associated with medical evacuation in the amount of $10,000.
• Additional terms - a policy secured to fulfill the insurance requirements shall not have a deductible that exceeds $500 per accident or illness, and must meet other standards specified in the regulations.
• Maintenance of insurance - willful failure on your part to maintain the required insurance will result in the termination of your exchange program.
