Social Security Number

The Social Security Administration (SSA) requires international students requesting a Social Security Number to verify their identity, visa status and employment.

When you apply for a Social Security Card you must have the following items:

1. Your passport
2. Your I-94
3. Your I-20 or DS-2019
4. A completed Application for a Social Security Card
5. Proof of Employment (choose one): Note: If you do not have a job or job offer, you cannot apply for a Social Security Number.
   
   
   • A letter from the International Center and assistantship award letter or pay stub.
     1. Bring your assistantship award letter (sample) or pay stub to the International Center.
     2. Submit the form as a document request at the International Center.
     3. ISSS will return a letter to you.
     4. Take the letter, along with the other materials mentioned above, to the Social Security Office
   • A form completed by both the employer and ISSS
     1. Download and complete the form (Form for Campus Dining Services, Form for Information and Access Technology Services, Form for all other employers)
     2. Submit the form as a document request at the International Center.
     3. ISSS will return the form to you.
     4. Take the form, along with the other materials mentioned above, to the Social Security Office.
