The Social Security Administration (SSA) requires international students requesting a Social Security Number to verify their identity, visa status and employment.
When you apply for a Social Security Card you must have the following items:
- Your passport
- Your I-94
- Your I-20 or DS-2019
- A completed Application for a Social Security Card
- Proof of Employment (choose one): Note: If you do not have a job or job offer, you cannot apply for a Social Security Number.
- A letter from the International Center and assistantship award letter or pay stub.
- Bring your assistantship award letter (sample) or pay stub to the International Center.
- Submit the form as a document request at the International Center.
- ISSS will return a letter to you.
- Take the letter, along with the other materials mentioned above, to the Social Security Office
- A form completed by both the employer and ISSS
- Download and complete the form (Form for Campus Dining Services, Form for Information and Access Technology Services, Form for all other employers)
- Submit the form as a document request at the International Center.
- ISSS will return the form to you.
- Take the form, along with the other materials mentioned above, to the Social Security Office.
