By their last semester of school, MU Sinclair School of Nursing students are well-versed in clinical skills. To complete their degrees, though, they need to learn about health issues beyond the bedside. The 'Nursing in Communities' class is designed to take students out of the hospital setting and expose them to health issues that affect vulnerable populations.

While the community nursing class traditionally has placed students in local and regional agencies, this year it gained an international focus. Through a study abroad program developed in collaboration with the International Center, thirteen nursing students traveled with faculty member Lynelle Phillips Phillips to Ghana in West Africa for two weeks to perform health outreach and screenings with several non-governmental organizations (NGOs).
