1. MU International News:

MU students continue to excel in international scholarship competitions. Four MU students have been awarded fellowships for international study in the 2004-2005 U.S. Student Fubright Competition. This marks the second year in a row that one out of three Fulbright applications submitted by MU students have been successful, well above the program's overall award rate of one in five applications. The successful grantees include: Sheila Browning (Journalism, Japan); Michele Mekel (Public Administration, Canada); Jeffrey Oliver (Journalism, Taiwan); and Monica Willis (Biology, Italy). In addition, MU graduate student Joel Davis received a 10-month grant from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) to conduct dissertation research in Germany.

Recipes needed for international cookbook. The International Center will be launching an international cookbook titled "From Many Lands" in November in conjunction with International Education Week 2004. Proceeds from cookbook sales will benefit future IEW activities. Share your favorite recipe online. The closing date for recipe submissions is Friday, 1 October.

New Mandatory Insurance for Study Abroad. In order to ensure that all study abroad participants enrolled at MU are fully covered by comprehensive health insurance while abroad, MU requires all participants to purchase the University of Missouri-Columbia Study Abroad Student Accident and Sickness Insurance administered by HTH Worldwide. Winter 2005 Study Abroad Programs - Deadline October 4, 2004. The application deadline for Winter 2005 study abroad programs is October 4, 2004 (Missouri London Program WS 2005 application deadline is September 13, 2004)! Application forms and instructions are available in the application section of the Study Abroad web-site.

International Student Workshop - Optional Practical Training. September 20, 3:00 - 4:00 pm, S206 Memorial Union; September 28, 4:00 - 5:00 pm, S207 Memorial Union. Optional Practical Training (OPT), a benefit of the F-1 visa, allows F-1 students to work in the US for up to one year after completing their studies. Come to the OPT Workshops to learn more about this benefit and how you can become authorized for OPT. (more info)

3. Funding Opportunities for Faculty

Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program--Korea Deadline Extended to September 2004. Though the Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program Korea offers up to 12 grants each year in most disciplines of the humanities and social sciences, with a particular interest in candidates who can offer lectures on the "Study of the United States" as it relates to their field. Grants range in length from 3-10 months. The Ph.D. or other terminal degree is required. Although the August 1 deadline has passed, CIES will continue to accept applications for Korea through September 2004. Browse awards and apply online at http://www.cies.org. USDA International Science and Education Competitive Grants Program--Deadline September 13. This program supports research, extension and teaching activities to enhance the capabilities of U.S. colleges and universities to conduct international collaborative research, extension and teaching. Approximately $3 million is expected to be available for awards of up to $100,000. Eligible are private and state-controlled institutions of higher education; and 1862, 1890, and 1994 Land-Grant institutions. (more info)

NSF International Research and Education: Planning Visit/Workshop Awards. International Planning Visit/Workshop Awards can support the initial phases of developing and coordinating integrated research and education activities with foreign partners. Support is primarily for travel and subsistence expenses. Planning Visit Awards (proposals may be submitted at any time) support travel to assess foreign facilities, equipment, or subjects of research, and to have detailed discussions with prospective foreign partners to finalize plans for cooperative research. Workshop Awards (deadline September 20) support joint workshops designed to identify common research priorities, focused on a specific, well-defined area of research collaboration. (more info)

Fulbright-Hays Faculty Research Abroad Fellowship Program--Deadline October 19. The Department of Education's Office of Postsecondary Education is seeking applications for the FY2005 Fulbright-Hays Faculty Research Abroad Fellowship Program, which offers opportunities to faculty members of institutions of higher education for research and study in modern foreign languages and area studies. Priority will be given to projects that focus on one or more of the following areas: Africa, East Asia, Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands, South Asia, the Near East, East Central Europe and Eurasia, and the Western Hemisphere (Canada, Central and South America, Mexico, and the Caribbean). Deadline for applications is October 19, 2004. (more info)

4. Funding Opportunities for Students

Spring 2005 Gilman Scholarships--Application Deadline September 22. The Gilman Scholarship provides awards of up to $5,000 for U.S. undergraduate students at two- and four-year institutions to pursue country-based undergraduate opportunities abroad of up to one academic year. To be eligible students must be receiving a Federal Pell Grant at the time of application and cannot be studying abroad in a country currently under a DOS Travel Warning or in Cuba. Application deadline for the spring 2005 scholarships is September 22. (more info).

Fulbright U.S. Student Program--Campus Deadline September 24. The Fulbright U.S. Student Program is designed to give recent graduates and graduate students opportunities for personal development and international experience. Students plan their own programs, which may include university course work and independent library or field research. Grants are available for students at all levels of graduate study and recent BA/BS graduates with appropriate language/academic preparation. Bridging Scholarship for Study in Japan--Spring 2005 deadline October 5. The Association of Teachers of Japanese Bridging Project accepts applications from American students participating in study-abroad programs in Japan. Funding from private foundations and major U.S. corporations has made it possible for ATJ to award 100 scholarships annually to assist students with the travel and living expenses they will incur while studying abroad in Japan. Undergraduate students majoring in any field of study are eligible to apply for these scholarships. Japanese language study is not a prerequisite. (more information)

Freeman-ASIA Award Program--Spring 2005 deadline October 15. The primary goal of the Freeman-ASIA Award Program is to increase the number of American undergraduate students who study in East and Southeast Asia, by providing them with the information and financial assistance they will need. Awards range from $3000-$7000 depending on program duration. (more information)

Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Research Abroad Fellowship Program--Deadline October 19. German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD)--Deadline November 15. The DAAD offers numerous scholarships for graduating seniors, advanced graduate students and Ph.D. candidates of high academic caliber who propose to study and/or conduct research at a German institution of higher education. Selection is based on academic excellence; proposed study plan and its feasibility. MU may nominate an applicant to receive priority consideration. http://www.daad.org
