1. MU International News:

2005 Global Scholars Program Reminder. The Council on International Initiatives is pleased to announce the seventh year of funding for the Global Scholars Program (GSP), a faculty curriculum development project that focuses on internationalizing MU's curriculum. Thanks to support from the Provost's Office, the program will continue in 2005 with a summer seminar to Spain, as well as individual GSP grants. The deadline for colleges/schools to submit both summer seminar and individual grant nominations to the International Center is February 2, 2005. Interested faculty should inquire with their Dean's office for college/school-specific nomination deadlines, procedures and criteria. (more information)

Call for Proposals - New Study Abroad Program Development Grants. The MU Study Abroad Advisory Council (SAAC), is pleased to announce a call for proposals for the development of new study abroad programs. A maximum of $3,000 per program will be awarded on a competitive basis to faculty/staff members to develop study abroad programs that meet curricular needs not met by MU's current study abroad offerings. Academic units must provide either financial or in-kind support for the proposed program equal to or greater than the amount of funding awarded by SAAC. Proposals are due March 1, 2005, for program development efforts to be initiated during summer 2005 or the 2005-2006 academic year. Awards will be announced on March 15, 2005. (more information)

Conference to Focus on Teaching with an International Perspective. The annual MU Teaching Renewal Conference (TRC) provides faculty with the opportunity to share ideas and research on teaching and student learning. TRC 2005, to be held February 24-26, will feature a track of sessions devoted to Teaching with an International Perspective. Sessions in this track will include:

  • Taking it Overseas: Faculty-led Study Abroad Programs;
  • Using International Issues to Inspire Critical Thinking;
  • The 'Internationalized' Course: A Practical Toolkit;
  • Global Reach, Local Touch at your Library;
  • Education Abroad Programs for Students in Highly Structured Majors;
  • Trends in Creating a Positive Atmosphere for Learning Internationally; and
  • Crossing Borders: Examining Cultural Assumptions and Promoting Intercultural Understanding.

On February 24 Dr. William B. Lacy, Vice-Provost University Outreach and International Programs at the University of California-Davis will present a keynote address entitled Achieving Global Competency for Our Students, Faculty and Universities. (more information)

MU to Host Missouri International Educator's State Meeting. Following its mission to provide statewide and regional leadership in the field of international education, the MU International Center is hosting the Missouri International Educators' Meeting on March 9, 2005 in the University of Missouri-Columbia Memorial Union. The meeting will feature sessions presented by professionals from throughout the state addressing topics related to international student admissions and advising, study abroad, and community involvement. The day before the meeting, International Center staff will conduct two NAFSA: Association of International Educators workshops: F-1 Regulations for Beginners and J Regulations For Beginners. American L.I.F.E. seeks community volunteers. The American League of International Friendship Encounters (L.I.F.E.) invites members of the Columbia and mid-Missouri community to volunteer as friendship partners to new international students during the Winter 2005 semester. As a LIFE friendship partner you can help a new international student become acquainted with the local community and learn more about American culture, as well as have the opportunity to broaden your own intercultural understanding. Free tax assistance available for nonresident students, faculty, and staff. Tax return assistance will be provided at no cost to nonresident students, faculty and staff and resident aliens with tax treaties by MU NRA VITA volunteers. The sessions are scheduled in Brady Commons, Room 209 on Feb. 21-25, March 14-18, and April 11-15 from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. for NRA's and from 10-11.30 a.m. on Feb. 25, March 18, and April 15 for RA's with treaties. Jill Hermsen, ISSS Coordinator, receives AIEA's Josephson Award. The International Center is proud to announce Jill Hermsen's selection as the recipient of the Association of International Education Administrators' (AIEA) Harold Josephson Award for Professional Promise in International Education. Each year the Association of International Education Administrators (AIEA) presents the Harold Josephson Award to a deserving graduate student at one of the member institutions. The award recognizes emerging leadership in international education through the student's graduate study and research, especially research in the field of international education. Congratulations Jill!

U.S. Arabic Distance Learning Network--Participation Deadline January 31. Montana State University-Bozeman is looking for institutions that want to add Arabic language to their modern language offerings to participate in an innovation project dubbed the U.S. Arabic Distance Learning Network, which is supported by the Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education (FIPSE). The network offers a full two-year program of Arabic language taught through a distance-learning approach complemented by face-to-face instruction and an integrated study abroad component for students who want to continue their Arabic studies. Opportunity to Host IREX Muskie Fellows--Application Deadline January 31, 2005. International Research and Exchanges Board (IREX) is currently accepting applications from U.S. universities and colleges interested in hosting Muskie fellows who hail from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Russian Federation, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan. Fulbright New Century Scholars Program--Deadline: February 1, 2005. Thirty top academics and professionals collaborate for a year on a topic of global significance. For 2005-2006, the research theme is "Higher Education in the 21st Century: Global Challenge and National Response." (more information)

Middle East Partnership Initiative Study of the U.S. Institutes--Deadline February 4, 2005. ECA announced a new competition to develop and implement three Study of the United States Institutes for students from the Middle East/North Africa as part of the Middle East Partnership Initiative. ECA is seeking applications from public and private nonprofit organizations for two institutes for undergraduate student leaders and one institute for recent high school graduates. Fulbright Distinguished Chairs Program--Deadline: May 1, 2005. The Fulbright Distinguished Chairs Program awards are among the most prestigious appointments in the Fulbright Scholar Program. Most awards are in Western Europe, although a few are available in Canada and Russia. (more information)

4. Funding Opportunities for Students

Emergency Assistance for Students from Southeast Asia--Deadline February 1, 2005. The Institute of International Education (IIE), a NAFSA Global Partner, and the Freeman Foundation have created a program to offer emergency assistance to undergraduates from southeast Asia at accredited U.S. institutions whose ability to pursue their studies has been seriously affected by the December 2004 earthquake/tsunami. Educational allowances of up to $5,000 are available to help undergraduate students from Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand continue their spring 2005 studies in the United States. U.S. campuses are invited to nominate up to four individuals for whom help is especially needed. Applications should be submitted to IIE by February 1 to be considered in the first round of funding. DAAD Undergraduate Fellowships for 2005/06: EDU.de Program to Germany--Deadline February 20, 2005. Highly qualified undergraduate students from the US and Canada are invited to apply for scholarships funding study, thesis research, and/or internships in Germany for one semester to one year. The goal of this program is to support study abroad in Germany and at German universities. Preference will be given to students whose projects or programs are based at and organized by a German university. Students may participate in an established study abroad program or pursue independent, self-designed study. For detailed information see http://www.daad.org.

Thomas R. Pickering Graduate Foreign Affairs Fellowship Program--Deadline February 28, 2005. The program seeks talented students in academic programs relevant to international affairs, political and economic analysis, administration, management, and science policy. The goal is to attract outstanding students from all ethnic, racial and social backgrounds, who have an interest in pursuing a Foreign Service career in the U.S. Department of State. The MU Office of the Vice Provost for International Programs and Faculty Development has a small supply of applications and brochures for anyone interested. (more information)
