1. MU International News:12 Study Abroad Alumni Receive Mizzou '39 Awards. In February the MU Alumni Association Student Board announced the inaugural class of Mizzou ’39 recipients. Of the 39 seniors honored, 12 have studied abroad sometime during their academic careers at MU. Recipients were selected based on their academic achievement, leadership, and service to Mizzou and the community. Students honored and their study abroad destinations are: Jennifer Bell (Florence, Italy); McKenzie Boyd (Alicante, Spain); Kristen Durham (Wuhan, China); Emily Egel (London, England); Christy Forkner (Monteverde and San Jose, Costa Rica); Mark Goth (London, England); Bridget Harrison (Alicante, Spain); Claire McClintic (Prague, Czech Republic); Lindsey Peters (Florence and Bergamo, Italy); Matthew Pierson (London, England); Sarah Rebholz (London, England); Amy Smith (Alicante, Spain). (more information) Funding available for internationalizing courses--Deadline April 19, 2005. As part of an on-going effort to internationalize the curriculum at MU, the Council on International Initiatives is offering up to ten (10) $1,000 stipends for faculty with continuing appointments to develop a new international course or significantly revise an existing course to make it more international. (more information) East meets West. 17 representatives from the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Regional Government (China) have begun a six month program at MU to learn more about American culture, history, political structure, and society. These visiting government officials and scholars will present a program on "Life in Inner Mongolia" to increase understanding of their country, its history, culture and changes that are currently occuring there. The program will be offered April 20th (2:00 - 3:00 pm, room N222 Memorial Union) and May 4 (10:00 am - 12:00 noon, Danial Boone Regional Library). (more information) 2. The Fulbright Distinguished Chairs Program awards are among the most prestigious appointments in the Fulbright Scholar Program. Most awards are in Western Europe, although a few are available in Canada and Russia. (more information) Tibet Exchange Projects Grant Proposal--Deadline May 9, 2005. The Office of Citizen Exchanges welcomes proposals in an open competition for Tibet Professional, Educational and Cultural Exchange Projects that focus on the themes of Cultural Preservation and Economic Self-sufficiency. The Office seeks proposals that train and assist Tibetans living in Tibetan communities in China by providing professional experience and exposure to American life and culture through internships, workshops and other learning and sharing experiences hosted by local U.S. institutions. (more information) UM's South African Education Program--Deadline July 15, 2005. The University of Missouri South African Education Program (UMSAEP) committee invites proposals for the following programs: 1) University of Missouri/University of the Western Cape Linkage Program; and 2) A South African Partnerships Program which supports collaborative projects between the University of Missouri and new or existing partners in South Africa. Eligibility: Applicants must be benefits-eligible (at least 75% FTE) University of Missouri employees holding academic appointments. Other University staff members will be considered in exceptional cases. (more information) Traditional Fulbright Scholar Program--Deadline August 1, 2005. The Fulbright Scholar Program offers U.S. faculty and professionals grants to lecture, do research or participate in seminars. (more information) 4. Opportunities for StudentsFunding for Asian Students With Summer Internships--Deadline April 15, 2005. The Institute of International Education (IIE), a NAFSA Global Partner, is accepting applications for Freeman ASSIST, which funds students from East and Southeast Asia in the United States who have secured internships with U.S. nonprofits for summer 2005. (more information) Summer seminars in India and Tunisia--Deadline April 15, 2005. The U.S. Department of State is sponsoring two summer workshops to provide undergraduates with opportunities for studying Middle Eastern cultures and languages. The program covers all expenses for participants to attend a 3-week seminar in either India (July 1 - 21, 2005) or Tunisia (June 12 - July 1, 2005). Students must be eligible for Pell Grants to be considered for this program. German Studies Research Grant--Deadline May 1, 2005. DAAD offers German Studies Research Grants to highly-qualified undergraduate students who are nominated by their department/program chairs. The grant may be used for short-term research in either North America or Germany. (more information) US-Russia Volunteer Initiative--Deadline May 16, 2005. The goal of the US-Russia Volunteer Initiative (USRVI) is to engage both Russian and American citizens, organizations, and businesses in cooperative volunteer activities through short-term bilateral exchanges. USRVI provides a unique opportunity for young Russians and Americans to volunteer abroad for approximately eight weeks in nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) and/or governmental service centers throughout Russia and the United States.
