1. MU International News:UM South African Education Program Invites Proposals - Deadline July 15, 2005. The University of Missouri South African Education Program (UMSAEP) committee invites proposals for the following programs: 1) The University of Missouri/University of the Western Cape Linkage Program - supporting academic exchange between the University of Missouri and the University of the Western Cape (UWC) in Cape Town, South Africa; and 2) The South African Partnerships program - supporting collaborative projects between the University of Missouri and new or existing partners in South Africa. Proposals must be received by July 15, 2005. (more information) Korean Language Course is back! Elementary Korean Language Course (Korean 1100) is back! This course is designed to develop the four essential language skills--speaking, listening, reading and writing-- in Korean. The course also provides useful information concerning culture (where culture touches on language and communication) and everyday life in Korea. (more information) MU faculty members receive funding to develop new study abroad programs. The Study Abroad Advisory Council (SAAC) recently awarded grants to five MU faculty for the purpose of developing new study abroad programs that meet curricular needs not met by MU's current study abroad offerings. Grant recipients are: Wendy Ashby (German & Russian Studies) for a summer German language program; Seonghee Cho (Hotel and Restaurant Management) for a summer program in Korea; Anne Dannerbeck (Social Work) for a summer program in Mexico; Molly Olsen and Jacquelyn Sandone (Romance Languages & Literatures) for a Winter Intersession Spanish language program in Costa Rica; and David Vaught (Parks, Recreation & Tourism) for a summer program to Western Canada. SAAC plans to issue another "Call for Proposals" in November 2005. (more information) 32 students receive scholarships for 2005-2006 study abroad. The International Center is proud to announce its continued financial support of students abroad. 32 students received a total of $18,500 for study either during Summer 2005, Fall 2005, or the full year (2005-2006). $9,500 of this amount was provided by the International Center, with an additional $5,500 to be awarded for Winter 2006. Partner programs such as Butler University, Arcadia University, Australearn, CIEE and American Intercontinental University provide the rest. Over the past few years, the International Center has awarded over $80,000 in aid to students going abroad. In addition to these competitive scholarships, MU students participating in IES and DIS programs are automatically eligible for a $1,500 discount on the cost of the program. The International Center also assists students in applying for national scholarships and grants for study abroad. In addition, the Financial Aid Office further helps students in locating funds to cover their term abroad. (more information) MU International Center Announces 2005-2006 Fellows for Impact Mizzou Program. The MU International Center, on behalf of the Impact Mizzou: International Leadership Fellows Program selection committee is pleased to announce the twelve fellows selected to participate in the Impact Mizzou program for the 2005-2006 academic year. The Impact Mizzou Program is a unique program offered by the International Center and other stakeholders across the MU campus to provide an opportunity for domestic and international students to develop skills to become globally competent leaders in the future. The 2005 - 2006 fellows are: Takako Homma (Japan); Wonju Lee (South Korea); Yi-Jiun Lin (Taiwan); Blair Meister (USA); Litah Miller (USA); Ruth Ninajanty (Indonesia); MKatherine Roehrick (USA); Carlotta Smith (USA); Jenny Stevens (USA); Carine Tannous (Lebanon); and Ashley Trent (USA). (more information) Thai University Deans Visit MU. The Asian Affairs Center and College of Education hosted two important visitors from Prince of Songkla University (PSU) in Thailand April 20-27, 2005. Dr. Wasant Atisabda, Dean, PSU College of Education and Dr. Thawee Thongkum, Associate Dean, PSU College of Education traveled to Columbia to meet with faculty in the ELPA and SISLT programs in MU’s College of Education to work out the details for establishing a graduate duel degree program between the two institutions. The program is only the latest outgrowth of the long-standing relationship between MU and PSU. Dr Wasant, himself an alumnus of the MU School of Education, and Dr. Thawee also met with a variety of faculty and administrators across campus to gain insight into how to best achieve their goal of transitioning PSU from a comprehensive university into a high-caliber research institution. MU student Christine Chan receives volunteer awards Congratulations to MU international student Christine Chan for receiving two awards in the past week - the MU Student Programming Board's "Unsung Heroes" Award and the Columbia Daily Tribune HERO Award. Both awards recognize outstanding volunteers on campus and in the community. Christine has devoted countless hours to promoting and supporting MU's international community. 2. Opportunities for FacultyRequest for Grant Proposals: Islamic Life in the United States - Deadline May 23, 2005. The U.S. Department of State invites proposals to develop and implement a multi-phased exchange involving the travel of scholars and clerics from Egypt, Jordan, and one or more additional countries of the Middle East to the United States and of reciprocal visits to the Middle East by American scholars of religion, scholars of Islamic studies, and clerics. (more information) ESRC-SSRC Collaborative Visiting Fellowship - Deadline June 1, 2005. The Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) and the Social Science Research Council (SSRC) are pleased to announce a fellowship for U.S. and Canadian scholars to visit and engage in collaborative activities with members of ESRC-supported projects in Britain, or for British scholars at ESRC-supported projects to visit collaborators in the U.S. or Canada, between July 2005 and September 2006. (more information) Traditional Fulbright Scholar Program - Deadline August 1, 2005. The Fulbright Scholar Program offers U.S. faculty and professionals grants to lecture, do research or participate in seminars. (more information) Scholar Rescue Fund - Next Deadline September 1, 2005. The Scholar Rescue Fund (SRF) awards fellowships to support temporary visits to universities and colleges around the world by scholars whose life, security or work is threatened in their home region. Scholars from any country and any field or discipline may qualify. Non-emergency applications are reviewed in October, January and April each year. Emergency applications may be reviewed on a more frequent basis. Awards are made to universities, colleges and other institutions willing to host a fellowship candidate and to contribute necessary additional support. The National Science Foundation (NSF) invites proposals to provide international research experiences for small groups of undergraduates and/or graduate students and for enhancement of doctoral dissertation research. (more information) International Research and Education: Planning Visits and Workshops - Deadline September 20, 2005. The National Science Foundation (NSF) invites proposals for workshops and planning visits that are catalytic and may lead to innovative international partnerships, training activities or collaborative research that could be funded by the Office of International Science and Engineering (OISE) and/or by NSF research directorates. (more information) 4. Opportunities for StudentsUS-Russia Volunteer Initiative - Deadline May 16, 2005. The goal of the US-Russia Volunteer Initiative (USRVI) is to engage both Russian and American citizens, organizations, and businesses in cooperative volunteer activities through short-term bilateral exchanges. USRVI provides a unique opportunity for young Russians and Americans to volunteer abroad for approximately eight weeks in nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) and/or governmental service centers throughout Russia and the United States. The Fulbright U.S. Student Program offers opportunities for recent graduates, postgraduate candidates, and developing professionals and artists to conduct career-launching study and research abroad.
