Meredith Peebles
MU in Legon at the University of Ghana, Fall Semester 2003
"I studied in Ghana during the fall semester of 2003 and had an amazing time overall, traveling around the country (and to a few others) as well as finding a niche for myself in the city where I lived. Traveling to the so called "third world" is a great opportunity because it is generally cheaper and easier to navigate because of the sheer abundance of public transport (not necessarily faster or safer though) and because you see a way of life unlike any you will find in the Western/industrialized world. My trip to Ghana has inspired me to find other international opportunities because now I know it is possible.
"While at the University of Ghana, I took traditional dance classes and three more academic classes: "The Black Diaspora," "Geography of the Developing World," and "Theories of Underdevelopment." I really enjoyed my classes, and I am extremely glad I took dance classes, because so much of the culture is tied to dance and music. Biology is my major course of study at MU; however, I was mainly interested in development from the outside (as related to colonialism) and cultural aspects that came from the inside (traditional culture and religion). I actually learned more from my classes than I thought I would. I think one reason this happened was because I studied with some Ghanaians; they know how the system works and usually get readings and such even before international students know that there are readings.
"Ghana is great, but be prepared to motivate yourself. Don't let others make your decisions for you, and try to be respectful! Respect and kindness will help you go a very long way. And don't let the concept of Africa scare you; many people have preconceived notions about what Africa is and isn't. Every country is different, and Ghana is one of the safest places to be in Africa.

Cheryl Morton
MU in Legon at the University of Ghana, Fall Semester 2000
"My name is Cheryl Morton, and I am a graduate student in geography at the University of Missouri-Columbia. I was able to take part in the Missouri-Africa program during the fall semester of 2000, and I studied in Accra, Ghana. I attended the University of Ghana at Legon, where I was able to enroll in classes within my major and interact with Ghanaian students studying within the same field. Courses are also available in everything from Physics to Islamic studies, and classes in African dance are very popular among foreign students. The experience of attending an African University was incredible, but the true value of this program lies in all of the things I was able to learn through travel, everyday experience, and the relationships I built with students from around the world. Everyday, I was introduced to people and places that have forever changed my outlook on life-study abroad in Africa is an incomparable experience." Email: cherylmorton@hotmail.com.
