Amy in Ireland

Amy Keith
Truman State University (Partner Program) in Maynooth at National University of Ireland-Maynooth, Fall Semester 2002

"Ever since I could remember, I have wanted to travel around the world. My first experience was an exchange program to Japan before my freshman year of high school. After that I was looking forward to seeing more, so I started to think of where I wanted to go next. I fell in love with Ireland through books and the movies. I got to study in Ireland during the Fall 2002 semester. It was a life-changing experience. I was used to being away from home while at MU, but this was totally different. I was entirely self-sufficient, living with four Irish students in an apartment in Maynooth, Ireland. I couldn't have asked for anything better, though. It took some getting used to, but I learned about a different culture and interacted with new people.

"I wasn't able to take classes in my major, because speech pathology is a relatively new field in Ireland, but I did take care of my electives. I would highly recommend taking some sort of history class and sociology of Northern Ireland. The theology department is extensive in Maynooth because St. Patrick's College was the first established seminary in Ireland. You are welcome to participate in theology courses while attending NUI-Maynooth, but you will have to check transfer credits.

"Being in Ireland gave me the opportunity to travel not just in the country, but elsewhere in Western Europe. I got to go to London, Oxford, Scotland, Germany and France. The most meaningful experience was Belfast, in Northern Ireland. You hear about the situation, but it doesn't really hit you until you go there. I was fortunate because I got to talk to party members in Stormount and see Protestant and Catholic ghettos. It just dumb-founded me to experience it all firsthand and truly understand what was going on.

"I truly wish I was back in Ireland, but I'm glad to say that I went there, and I hope to return because I made a lot of great friends. If you have any questions about studying in Maynooth or Ireland in general, please e-mail me." Email: ackcd7@mizzou.edu.

Liz in Ireland

Liz Noelker
Arcadia University (Partner Program) in Cork at University College Cork, Winter Semester 2002

"I am a speech pathology major here at MU, and I studied in Ireland my sophomore year. I had a little time to spend due to high school credit hours, and I'd always wanted to study abroad. Going to Ireland allowed me to broaden my horizons with different kinds of classes. Being a speech pathology student, I'm kind of limited to a wide variety of classes. When I was in Cork, I did not take one class for my major (and that was my choice). I took all kinds of Irish classes: Irish Literature, History of Ireland, Archeology of Ireland and Irish Music. I got the full Irish experience! I would have to say this was the experience of a lifetime. I learned so many things that aren't learned in a classroom and met people who have enriched my life to its fullest. I would not take back one second. Europe is such a fascinating place with so much culture and history - to spend time in any country over there is beneficial for everyone. I was given so much freedom over there to travel and explore - it was perfect! The friends I made, the fun I had and the knowledge I took in will stay with me forever, and I'm so glad I didn't let anything hold me back. I hope everyone gets this chance and takes it!" Kalista-Chimene in Ireland

Kalista-Chimene Mountjoy
Truman State University (Partner Program) in Limerick at the University of Limerick, Academic Year 2000-2001

"Hi, my name is Kalista, and I am studying Communication with an emphasis in business. University of Limerick had plenty of business classes but only a couple in communications. I had probably the most fabulous year of my life while in Ireland. The land is breathtaking, the people are the friendliest I've ever met, and the culture is something that gets under your skin and makes you feel like you are a part of the life there (I felt that way anyway!). I lived in Ireland for 10 months and had the most fabulous time. Please feel free to e-mail me to ask any questions, to meet to look at my pictures of my life in Ireland or to ask questions/hear stories in person. I graduate in May but will be back in the fall to live in Columbia for a bit. I look forward to hearing from you!!!" E-mail: kalistachimene@yahoo.com.

Robert in Ireland

Robert Mahon
Truman State (Partner Program) in Limerick at the University of Limerick, Academic Year 2000-2001

"Hi. My name is Robert Mahon, and for the academic year of 2000-01, I studied in Limerick, Ireland. I am a junior now at Mizzou majoring in microbiology. While in Limerick I decided to take classes that went towards general education requirements instead of my major. I am thankful for that decision because it gave me the opportunity to study such subjects as Irish history and writers. I was also, however, able to take physics which did go towards my major, so the opportunity is there for science majors. Limerick itself is an authentic Irish town with little of the annoying tourist traps found in other places. It's also a college town with many nightspots geared towards the student. Also, most cities are only 2-3 hrs. away from Limerick, so you are never too far away from all the beauties of Ireland. The winter semester has a two week break, so the opportunity to travel throughout Europe was there and one that I and most of the American students did not waste.

"I love talking about my experiences and would love to talk to anyone who's interested in studying at the U. of Limerick or studying abroad in general, so please feel free to email. E-mail: rnmb23@mizzou.edu.
