Thomas in Netherlands

Thomas Dohogne
MU in Utrecht at Hogeschool van Utrecht, Fall Semester 2002

"I would recommend that every student study in The Netherlands for at least one semester. I studied in Utrecht as a "Finance/ Accountancy" major, and the courses I took will transfer back for credit towards my Economics emphasis.  These courses included a survey of marketing course, an international logistics law course, a course in the costs and mechanical logistics of international commerce; also taken was an introduction to Dutch culture course, and an intercultural management course.  These courses were geared towards international students.  All but a handful of my peers were from Europe, all but two from outside the United States.  Thus, the English used was very competent and the perspective taken decidedly different than anything I have encountered here.  The Dutch are a society based on consensus, thus their teaching methods are critical yet friendly, focused on the growth of the individual within the group.   The instructors are of an unique and high quality; the former CEO of Chrysler, Europe was one of my professors, along with an independent consultant who had done freelance military planning for the US and French governments for the past 25 years.

"Being a school that serves European English speakers, the Hogeschool offers the ability to interact with all of the cultures of the European Union - definitely one of the best benefits of the program. It is a blast to see how different students from seemingly geographically close quarters act both in school and in public. Utrecht is also the academic center of Holland. With a total of 65,000 students in its different schools, the city feels very youthful and active.

"Many clubs exist for interests ranging from chess to water sports to ice hockey. These, too, are very accepting of foreigners and are easy to become involved with, as time permits. If one wants to be an academic and explore interests of personal knowledge, or if one wants to meet people in a party scene and lead an energized life, either could be done to a great degree of success. The rule of Holland is that you should do what you want as long as it does not infringe upon anyone else. This program is also very reasonable financially. In addition, the school work is not overwhelming, and the quality of the school is very high. Most work is done outside of the classroom which allowed me to travel frequently."

"To conclude, this program allowed me to meet many great people and a few exceptional ones. It was the most fun I have had consecutively in my life and opened my eyes to perspectives that I would not have had before, had I not been given the opportunity to challenge myself in such a venue. If you have any questions about the program or the Netherlands itself, please e-mail me." E-mail: tjddc3@mizzou.edu.
