The following programs offer scholarships specifically for study abroad. You should apply for these directly to the program sponsor.
- Baden-Wuerttemberg Fellowship Program - Students studying on MU in Stuttgart or Tuebingen, Germany are eligible. Scholarships may be granted for a minimum of four and a maximum of 10 months. The minimum monthly award is € 400. Application deadline is mid-March. See the Germany Study Abroad Advisor for details!
- Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program - Selected by competition, recipients receive $5000 to defray the costs of study abroad (20 MU students have won the Gilman Scholarship since 2002!)
- Bridging Scholarship for study in Japan - This website also contains links for additional scholarship opportunities for study in Japan.
- BUTEX scholarships are open to all undergraduate students currently registered at an institution in the USA or Canada. To be eligible to apply you must have been offered a place as a study abroad or exchange student in a UK university which is a member of BUTEX (British Transatlantic Exchange Association). The value of each scholarship is US$1,000 and will be paid to the winners once they have arrived and registered at their host university.
- DAAD: German Academic Exchange Service - Scholarships may be granted for a minimum of four and a maximum of 10 months for study in Germany. Recipients will be awarded a monthly stipend of €615, plus additional funds to help defray travel and research expenses as well as health insurance (one MU student received this scholarship for 2003-2004). Application deadline is mid-February.
- Freeman Asia - Freeman-ASIA (Freeman Awards for Study in Asia) is designed to support American undergraduates with demonstrated financial need who are planning to study overseas in East or Southeast Asia. Awards will be paid directly to the student, according to the following fixed amounts only.
- Summer Program $3,000 - Semester Program $5,000 - Academic Year Program $7,000
- IIE Rocky Mountain Regional Scholarships for Study Abroad - Apply today for one of two competitive scholarships offered by the Institute of International Education Rocky Mountain Regional Center. IIE Rocky Mountain offers awards scholarships annually to outstanding students at IIE Education Associate member institutions in the Rocky Mountain region, including Missouri. International and U.S. students are eligible to apply for the Adell & Hancock grant of $2,400. Only U.S. graduate students are eligible for the Petry grant of $5,000.
- Institute for International Public Policy's Fellowship Program - Funded by a grant from the Department of Education, The IIPP addresses the need for diverse perspectives within the international affairs arena, pipelining students through a sequence of components including 2 rigorous summer academic institutes, study abroad, intensive language training, internship, and graduate school. The Fellowship program is valued at approximately $70,000 per fellow. Deadline is mid-March.
- JASSO (Japan Student Services Organization) scholarship - Recipients receive round-trip airfare to Japan, a ¥80,000 monthly stipend, and one-time allowance of ¥25,000. (Application available from your MU Study Abroad Advisor)
- Monbukagakusho Scholarship for Japan - the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology (MEXT) offers five different scholarships for non-Japanese nationals wishing to study in Japan.
- NSEP: National Security Education Program, David L. Boren Undergraduate Scholarships - This program provides $2,500 to $20,000 for summer, semester or year-long study abroad programs. Recipients are required to fulfill a service requirement with an agency or office of the federal government involved in national security affairs. - Phi Kappa Phi - Phi Kappa Phi is a highly selective academic honor society that draws members from all academic disciplines within colleges and universities. Phi Kappa Phi Study Abroad Grants exist to recognize scholarly endeavors. They are designed specifically to recognize and assist undergraduates as they seek knowledge abroad. Fifty grants, valued at $1,000 each, are awarded annually. In order to be eligible, students must have earned at least 56 but no more than 90 college credit hours and have a GPA of at least 3.5 on a 4.0 scale.
- Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholarships - This program sponsors several types of scholarships (with awards as high as $25,000) for undergraduate and graduate students as well as for qualified professionals pursuing vocational studies. MU students may apply for a scholarship through a Rotary Club in Columbia or through the Rotary Club in their home community in Missouri or elsewhere. Students interested in applying to local clubs should contact Melvin Platt, School of Music, 140 Fine Arts Building.
