Q. What does this program offer?
A. For almost 50 years, the Junior Year Program at the University of Bonn has provided students from more than 30 partner universities from around the world with the opportunity of studying for either a semester or year in Bonn. The program offers a four week intensive orientation course prior to the semester commencement, a flexible program structure that caters to needs and interests of students, and a structure which allows students to be completely integrated into the German education system. Furthermore, the program offers students the opportunity of becoming interculturally competent through German language instruction with native speakers while being completely immersed in German society. While studying at the University of Bonn, students can receive academic assistance through Study Buddies and Sprachtandems, and get involved with the International Club. Internships and volunteer opportunities through the International Club may also be available.

Q. What is it like there?
A. Bonn's charms are hard to miss, as it is not only a beautiful historic city located on the banks of the Rhine, but also serves as a vibrant and engaging environment in which to live, work and study. As Bonn was the former seat of government, the city still houses various governmental institutions as well as a number of international organizations. These include 17 UN affiliate organizations, such as the United Nations Volunteers Programme (UNV), and some major corporations like Deutsche Telekom and Deutsche Post. Furthermore, Bonn is an internationally recognized base for scientific study, and the study of the arts. Bonn has a rich artistic heritage, as it is the city of Ludwig van Beethoven's place of birth and maintains its own opera house, several theaters, concert halls and a wide range of museums. With a student body of about 27,000, the University of Bonn is one of Germany's largest universities with about 5,000 international students annually.

Q. What will I study?
A. Within this tailor made study abroad program students can enroll in over 80 disciplines as well as in special German language courses.

Q. When can I go?
A. You can participate in this program for any of the following terms:

yes Fall Semester
yes Spring Semester
yes Academic Year

Q. Where will I live?
A. The International Office takes care of formalities including accommodations. Students are either housed in a dormitory or shared apartments.

Q. Will I get academic credit?
A. You may earn between 12 and 15 credit hours per semester abroad. Course credit transfers to MU, but your grades will not appear on your MU transcript and are not figured into your GPA. Although you are guaranteed to receive credit for successfully completed courses, you must work with your academic advisors to get pre-approval for how the courses you take might fulfill specific degree requirements. As part of your pre-departure preparation, you will need to look up what courses are available on the program and then arrange to meet with your academic advisor to get pre-approval for the courses you wish to take.

Q. Can I afford to go?
A. MU attempts to make the costs of studying abroad affordable for you. Because this is a non-exchange program, you will pay MU educational fees, non-resident tuition (for non-Missouri residents), and information technology fees. You will also pay a $350 study abroad administrative fee to cover MU administrative costs. Additional expenses for this program include international airfare, on-site housing costs, and other miscellaneous expenses. See the estimated expenses page for more details about the cost of participating in this program compared to a comparable time at MU. Estimated costs for this program are listed below.

Q. Can I get financial aid?
A. Most financial aid that you normally receive for your classes at MU should apply to the cost of the program. If you are not a Missouri resident, you will be billed for MU non-resident fees and so remain eligible for any non-resident scholarships you receive from MU. Additional grants, loans or scholarships may be available to offset the extra costs incurred on this program. Please see the advisor for study abroad financing at the MU Financial Aid Office for more complete information. The International Center offers study abroad scholarships as well. Scholarship applications are included in the MU Study Abroad Application. More information is also available on the MU Financial Aid Office Web site.

Q. Am I eligible?
A. If you are a junior, senior, or a qualified sophomore with a minimum GPA of 3.0, you are eligible to apply. In addition, you should have completed a minimum of four or five semesters of college-level German.

Q. How do I apply?
A. See the Study Abroad Application Instructions on this web-site for more information.

Q. Where can I find out more?
A. In the Study Abroad Resource Room at the International Center, you will find additional information on this and other overseas opportunities. Peer Advisors will be on hand to answer any questions you may have, and Study Abroad Advisors are available by appointment. You can also visit the University of Bonn Web site for more information about the program.
