Q. What does this program offer? A. The University of Missouri entered into an exchange program in 1992 with Université Jean Moulin-Lyon III, which ranks among the top ten universities in France. Lyon III, as the university is typically called, is part of a university system created in the 1970s that is comprised of schools of law, business and humanities-- each of which is located in the city of Lyon.
Q. What is it like there? A. With a population of over 1 million people, Lyon is second to Paris only in size. Lyon is the culinary capital of France and, although it is one of Europe's largest economic centers, Lyon is a friendly and relaxed city. Lyon's cultural and economic grandeur is not new. As the center of the French Renaissance, Lyon established itself as the printing press for Europe in the 15th century and as the lucrative hub of European silk production in the 16th century. Lyon's Renaissance heritage manifests itself through the architecture of Vieux Lyon, where you can still see well-preserved townhouses displaying ornate 16th-century facades and elegant courtyards.
Q. What will I study? A. The full academic year and fall semester programs begin with a three-week orientation during which you will learn how to prepare for university courses, receive advice on how to arrange a course schedule and obtain an introduction to life in Lyon. Most fall semester Lyon III courses begin in the middle of September and end in late December. Winter semester classes begin in early January and run until early June. Students are enrolled in either the Law School (Faculté de Droit), the Business School (l'I.A.E.), or the Humanities School (Faculté des Lettres), which includes French literature and language, some psychology, geography and history, and the philosophy department. In addition to your regular coursework, you will take a French language class for two hours a week.
Q. When can I go? A. You can participate in this program for any of the following terms:
Fall Semester
Spring Semester
Academic Year
Q. Where will I live? A. You may live in rented rooms, with families, or in modern residence halls. The university does not secure the first two options for you, and although they take time to find, they are often moderately priced and conveniently located. Residence halls are located near the university and typically consist of a single or double occupancy studio with a kitchenette and a bathroom. You may either cook your own meals or purchase them at university cafeterias.
Q. Will I get academic credit? A. For each semester of academic work completed abroad, you may earn between 12 and 15 credit hours. Course credit transfers to MU, but your grades will not appear on your MU transcript and are not figured into your GPA. Although you are guaranteed to receive credit for successfully completed courses, you must work with your academic advisors to get pre-approval for how the courses you take might fulfill specific degree requirements. As part of your pre-departure preparation, you will need to look up what courses are available on the program and then arrange to meet with your academic advisor(s) to get pre-approval for the courses you wish to take.
Q. Can I afford to go? A. MU attempts to make the costs of studying abroad affordable for you. Because this is a reciprocal exchange program, you will pay MU educational fees, non-resident tuition (for non-Missouri residents), student activities fees, information technology fees and the student health center fee. You will also pay a $500 study abroad administrative fee to cover MU administrative costs. Additional expenses for this program include international airfare, on-site housing costs, health insurance and other miscellaneous expenses. Estimated costs for this program are listed below.
Q. Can I get financial aid? A. Most financial aid that you normally receive for your classes at MU should apply to the cost of the program. If you are not a Missouri resident, you will be billed for MU non-resident fees and so remain eligible for any non-resident scholarships you receive from MU. Additional grants, loans or scholarships may be available to offset the extra costs incurred on this program. Please see the advisor for study abroad financing at the MU Financial Aid Office for more complete information. The International Center offers study abroad scholarships as well. Scholarship applications are included in the MU Study Abroad Application. More information is also available on the MU Financial Aid Office Web site.
Q. Am I eligible? A. If you are a sophomore, junior or senior, with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above, and you have completed French 2160 or the equivalent, you are eligible to apply. As this is an MU exchange program, spaces may be limited. In the event that there are more qualified applicants than spaces available, exchange placements will be awarded to the most highly qualified applicants. Please contact your Study Abroad Advisor for additional information.
Q. How do I apply? A. See the Study Abroad Application Instructions on this web-site for more information.
Q. Where can I find out more? A. In the Study Abroad Resource Room at the International Center, you will find additional information on this and other overseas opportunities. Peer Advisors will be on hand to answer any questions you may have, and Study Abroad Advisors are available by appointment. You can also visit the Université Jean Moulin Web site for more information about the program.
