Q. What does this program offer? A. The University of Missouri participates in a direct exchange program with Universität des Saarlandes in Saarbrücken. This program is for the full academic year or for the spring semester only. The fall semester begins in early September, and the beginning of March for the spring semester. Classes end in mid-July. This program is recommended for students in lower level German courses who would like a semester studying intensive German language. Most students earn a German minor after participating on this program. Many go on to double-major in German.
Q. What is it like there? A. The university, currently enrolling 15,000 students, is known throughout Germany for its business school and modern curriculum. Many French and Belgium students study in Saarbrücken and many classes are also offered in French. Saarbrücken is a modern city. Gothic churches adjoin postmodern museums. Industrial parks are connected to the cosmopolitan downtown by a transit system. The city's proximity to France, Belgium and Luxembourg has produced a blend of French and German culture.
Q. What will I study? A. The program begins with a 4-week intensive German language program at the Studienkolleg. You can continue with coursework at the Studienkolleg during the first semester and/or enroll in classes in the regular university system. Depending on your current level of German, you may earn up to 15 hours of German language credit after a semester in the Studienkolleg. Semester participants generally focus most of their studies at the Studienkolleg. Academic year participants usually attend the Studienkolleg during the first semester, then fully enroll in four or five regular classes the second semester. You may find course information at: www.uni-saarland.de/de/profil/ veroeffentlichungen/vvz/
Q. When can I go? A. You can participate in this program for any of the following terms:
Fall Semester
Spring Semester
Academic Year
Q. Where will I live? A. Students at the Universität des Saarlandes live in residential halls with other German and international students. You will have a single room and share bathroom and kitchen facilities. Because Saarbrücken does not offer a meal plan, you will cook for yourself, eat on campus or in the town of Saarbrücken. You will pay housing fees directly to the Universität des Saarlandes upon arrival.
Q. Will I get academic credit? A. For each semester of academic work completed abroad, you may earn between 12 and 15 credit hours. Course credit transfers to MU, but your grades will not appear on your MU transcript and are not figured into your GPA. Although you are guaranteed to receive credit for successfully completed courses, you must work with your academic advisors to get pre-approval for how the courses you take might fulfill specfic degree requirements. As part of your pre-departure preparation, you will need to look up what courses are available on the program and then arrange to meet with your academic advisor to get pre-approval for the courses you wish to take. A maximum of 18 hours in German can be earned while abroad.
Q. Can I afford to go? A. MU attempts to make the costs of studying abroad affordable for you. Because this is a reciprocal exchange program, you will pay 6 credit hours of MU educational fees, non-resident tuition (for non-Missouri residents), student activities fees, information technology fees and the student health center fee. You will also pay a $500 study abroad administrative fee to cover MU administrative costs. Additional expenses for this program include international airfare, on-site housing costs, and other miscellaneous expenses. See the estimated expenses page for more details. Estimated costs for this program are listed below.
Q. Can I get financial aid? A. Most financial aid that you normally receive for your classes at MU should apply to the cost of the program. If you are not a Missouri resident, you will be billed for MU non-resident fees and so remain eligible for any non-resident scholarships you receive from MU. Additional grants, loans or scholarships may be available to offset the extra costs incurred on this program. Please see the advisor for study abroad financing at the MU Financial Aid Office for more complete information. The International Center offers study abroad scholarships as well. Scholarship applications are included in the MU Study Abroad Application.
Q. Am I eligible? A. If you are a junior, senior, or a qualified sophomore with a minimum GPA of 2.7, you are eligible to apply. In addition, you should have completed a minimum of three semesters of college-level German.
Q. How do I apply? A. See the Study Abroad Application Instructions on this web-site for more information.
Q. Where can I find out more? A. In the Study Abroad Resource Room at the International Center, you will find additional information on this and other overseas opportunities. Peer Advisors will be on hand to answer any questions you may have, and Study Abroad Advisors are available by appointment. You can also visit the Universität des Saarlandes website for more information about the program.
