Map of Germany

Q. What does this program offer?
A. The University of Missouri participates in a direct exchange program with Eberhard-Karls-Universität, Tübingen. This program is for the spring semester or academic year. The program begins in mid-September with a 3-week intensive German language program. Regular courses begin after the first week of October and end in late June. The spring semester program begins in late March with a 3-week intensive language program, with regular courses beginning in mid-April. Examinations are held during the month of July.

Q. What is it like there?
A. Tübingen, population 85,000, is located approximately 30 miles south of Stuttgart in the state of Baden-Württemberg. The city's geographical location prevented its destruction during World War II, so the city's center of gabled homes and winding lanes maintains its old-world European charm. The presence of the prestigious university has lent Tübingen a stimulating, intellectual atmosphere for 500 years. Famous writers like Hesse, Hölderlin, Schelling and Kepler all lived and studied in Tübingen for a time. The university was founded in 1477 and is a world-renowned institution of higher learning. Tübingen enrolls about 28,000 students and offers an expansive selection of academic courses and programs.

Q. What will I study?
A. MU students will take four or five classes each semester. You will chose from university-wide course offerings including social and behavioral sciences, modern languages and literature, history, art history, educational and sports psychology, geography, math, chemistry, biology and pharmacology, theology, law and philosophy. Course information may be found at: www.uni-tuebingen.de/uni/qvo/vorl/vvinhalt.html

Q. When can I go?
A. You can participate in this program for any of the following terms:
no Fall Semester
yes Spring Semester
yes Academic Year

Q. Where will I live?
A. Most students live in University housing, which consists of a private room with communal bath, kitchen and living facilities. You may cook your own meals or purchase them in a university cafeteria. The university does not offer a meal plan.

Q. Will I get academic credit?
A. You may earn between 12 and 15 credit hours per semester abroad. Overseas course credit transfers to MU, but your grades will not appear on your MU transcript and are not figured into your GPA. Although you are guaranteed to receive credit for successfully completed courses, the credit may not fulfill your degree requirements. Before you leave, you and your academic advisors must select courses offered abroad, which will count toward your degree. A maximum of 18 hours in German can be earned while abroad.

Q. Can I afford to go?
A. MU attempts to make the costs of studying abroad affordable for you. Because this is a reciprocal exchange program, you will pay MU educational fees, non-resident tuition (for non-Missouri residents), student activities fees, information technology fees and the student health center fee. You will also pay a $500 study abroad administrative fee to cover MU administrative costs. Additional expenses for this program include international airfare, on-site housing costs, and other miscellaneous expenses. See the estimated expenses page for more details about the cost of participating in this program compared to a comparable time at MU. Estimated costs for this program are listed below.

Q. Can I get financial aid?
A. Most financial aid that you normally receive for your classes at MU should apply to the cost of the program. If you are not a Missouri resident, you will be billed for MU non-resident fees and so remain eligible for any non-resident scholarships you receive from MU. Additional grants, loans or scholarships may be available to offset the extra costs incurred on this program. Please see the advisor for study abroad financing at the MU Financial Aid Office for more complete information. The International Center offers study abroad scholarships as well. Scholarship applications are included in the MU Study Abroad Application.

Q. Am I eligible?
A. If you are a junior, senior, or a qualified sophomore with a minimum GPA of 3.0, you are eligible to apply. In addition, you should have completed a minimum of four to six semesters of college-level German.

Q. How do I apply?
A. See the Study Abroad Application Instructions on this web-site for more information.

Q. Where can I find out more?
A. In the Study Abroad Resource Room at the International Center, you will find additional information on this and other overseas opportunities. Peer Advisors will be on hand to answer any questions you may have, and Study Abroad Advisors are available by appointment. You can also visit the Eberhard-Karls-Universität website for more information about the program.
