The MU International Center and the Department of Art sponsor this Summer Faculty-Led study abroad program, hosted by the Florence Academy of Art in Florence, Italy. Professor Mark G. Langeneckert will lead a four-week program that is open to all students and offers MU credit.

In Florence students who choose to study drawing or painting will be provided with individual instruction, demonstrations, and group critiques. Explore the beauty and history of the Renaissance under the unique blue of the Florentine sky - painting, sketching, taking photographs, or creating designs inspired by the magnificent surroundings. Picture yourself immersed in the splendor and culture of Florence visiting museums housing some of the greatest artworks of Western Civilization, lingering in splendid Renaissance and Baroque churches, villas and palazzos, venturing out to other beautiful sites and cities such as Pisa, Venice and Rome.

Program dates

June 1 - June 30, 2010

FACULTY PROGRAM DIRECTOR(S)

University of Missouri faculty member, Mark Langeneckert, MU Department of Art, will accompany the students to Florence. Professor Langeneckert has experience leading MU summer programs in Florence, and will be a great asset to the program.

Faculty-Led Programs enrich the study abroad experience as well as the MU campus by providing students opportunities to study other cultures and disciplines in depth while gaining new perspectives on our own society. Faculty leaders serve as mentors, role-models, and resources, as students explore their host institution and country.

"The experience of Florence brings to life some of the most revered and treasured masterpieces of western art. Journey back in history to the 12th century a.d. and immerse yourself in this visually rich culture."

ACADEMICS

The main focus of study for this program is the development of one's conceptual skills in regards to art-making. What does it mean to make art in a city of such rich cultural and historical importance? It is the job of the instructor to address this question and assist the students in finding their own "voice". The expectations of the instructor will vary according to the level of experience and skill of each student. The instructor will provide individual and group demonstrations of various drawing and painting techniques in order to help the students get started. Students will have the option of taking drawing or painting for undergraduate or graduate credits.

Course Objectives

  1. To develop an understanding and appreciation for the rich history of the Italian renaissance.
  2. To develop your conceptual skills leading to a personal point of view.
  3. To create a small body of work based on your experiences and skill level.

Course Requirements

  1. Students are expected to attend all the group events and tours of the museums and churches in order to receive the 3 hours of undergraduate or graduate credit.
  2. Students should expect to spend a minimum of 20 hours per week on their drawings or paintings.
  3. While there are no formal class meetings, students are expected to participate in the weekly critiques to discuss their progress.
