Marburg Program Brochure
Q. What does this program offer? A. Beginning in Summer of 2008, the International Center and the MU Department of German and Russian Studies will offer a four week study abroad program hosted by the Philipps Universität, Marburg, Germany. Philipps Universität, Marburg, founded in 1527, is a world-renowned research institution and one of the oldest universities in Germany. In Marburg, you will study with students from around the world in the International Summer University (ISU), while learning firsthand about German and European culture. You can also visit the International Summer University website.
Q. What is it like there? A. Located in the heart of Germany, Marburg is a small, lively and safe medieval town with a long university tradition. With approximately 19,300 students and 7,500 staff members, Philipps Universität, Marbug is one of German‘s medium-sized univeristies. The ISU location, university cafeteria, and the romantic and picturesque old city with its castle, cafes, boutiques, as well as movie theaters and museums are all within walking distance. You will learn your way around quickly. Recently named “the creative little city,“ students will have the opportunity to enjoy a multitude of artistic venues from classical music to open-air festivals.
Q. What will I study? A. Students will complete two seminars taught in English or in German related to the ISU theme Has Europe learned from history? Cultural, political and economic perspectives of a uniting continent. Seminars are offered in politics and economics, or culture taught by faculty members selected from different universities in Europe and the US. Students will take intensive German language at one of three different levels (beginning, intermediate or advanced). Students will earn 6 MU credit hours by enrolling in German 3001 and 3005 during the summer session. Classes are held in the morning and afternoon. A cultural program includes special guest lectures, excursions to other cities in Hessen, a boat trip on the Rhine river, a concert, and a visit to a local museum.
Q. When does the program run? A. The tentative dates for this program are July 14-August 9, 2008. Please double-check the program dates with your advisor.
Q. Where will I live? A. The University of Marburg will provide each student with their own single room in the university dormitories. The dorms are situated outside the historical center and can be easily reached by local bus. Linens are provided.
Q. Will I get academic credit? A. Although you are guaranteed to receive MU credit for successfully completed courses, you must work with your academic advisors to get pre-approval for how the courses you take might fulfill specific degree requirements. With careful planning, the six credit hours you earn in Marburg should meet degree requirements. Because the Marburg classes are actual courses offered on the MU campus, the grades you receive for these classes will be calculated into your MU GPA.
Q. Can I afford to go? A. MU attempts to make the costs of studying abroad affordable for you, however this is a fee-paying program, where MU students will be paying a program fee set by the host university. You will pay MU educational fees, non-resident fees (for non-Missouri residents), the information technology fee for 6 hours and a $350 study abroad fee to cover MU administrative costs. See the estimated expenses page for more details about the cost of participating in this program compared to a comparable time at MU. Estimated costs for this program are listed below.
Q. Can I get financial aid? A. Most financial aid that you normally receive for your classes at MU will apply to the cost of the program. If you are not a Missouri resident, you will be billed for MU non-resident fees, and, therefore, remain eligible for any non-resident scholarships you receive from MU. Additional grants, loans or scholarships may be available to offset the extra costs incurred on this program. Please see the advisor for study abroad financing at the MU Financial Aid Office for more complete information. The International Center offers study abroad scholarships as well. Scholarship applications are included in the MU Study Abroad Application. More information is also available on the MU Financial Aid Office website.
Q. Am I eligible? A. MU students with a GPA of 2.5 or higher who are interested in German language and German and European economics, politics, and culture are welcome to apply.
Q. How do I apply? A. See the Study Abroad Application Instructions on this web-site for more information.
Q. Where can I find out more? A. In the Study Abroad Resource Room at the International Center, you will find additional information on this and other overseas opportunities. Peer Advisors will be on hand to answer any questions you may have, and Study Abroad Advisors are available by appointment. You can also visit the Philipps Universitat website for more information about the program.
