INTRODUCTION

Program Description and Location

Program photo

The University of Missouri (MU) International Center and Department of Romance Languages and Literatures partner with the University of Oviedo's Cursos de Español Para Extranjeros (CEPE) to offer a summer Spanish language, culture, and literature program. MU Professor John Zemke will lead the program and teach a course on Hispanic Literature.

The University of Oviedo is located on the north coast of Spain and was established in 1608. In Oviedo, you will take classes with students from a wide variety of countries, while learning about Spanish and European cultures. Participants will also be immersed in the Spanish language and culture outside of the classroom, as homestays are provided with Spanish families. This program is a fantastic way to improve your knowledge of the Spanish language, history, and literature by experiencing the culture firsthand.

Program dates

July 5 – July 30, 2010

FACULTY PROGRAM DIRECTOR(S)

University of Missouri faculty member, Dr. John Zemke, MU Department of Romance Languages, will accompany the students to Oviedo. Dr. Zemke has extensive experience leading MU summer programs in Spain, and will be a great asset to the program.

Faculty-Led Programs enrich the study abroad experience as well as the MU campus by providing students opportunities to study other cultures and disciplines in depth while gaining new perspectives on our own society. Faculty leaders serve as mentors, role-models, and resources, as students explore their host institution and country.

"An Oviedo 2008 veteran shared with other students that the program had opened her eyes and changed her life: she now has different goals for herself. This was a source of immense satisfaction for me." Photo of Faculty Director(s)

John Zemke

High School diploma obtained, I travelled by bus from London to Athens and travelled through the islands and Crete for several months. A few years later, I spent half a year in Frigiliana, a costal mountain village in Malaga, Spain. I studied twice in Portugal, a summer course in Coimbra and another in Lisbon, where our then year-old daughter pronounced her first word, vaca and agua, and told jokes in Portuguese on the train. I have journeyed to Britain, Ireland, Morocco, Turkey, and Israel, where I resided AY 2001-2002. I have travelled extensively throughout the Iberian Peninsula.

Northern Spain offers students a unique combination of prehistoric cave paintings, Roman cities, medieval towns, Romanesque and Gothic architecture, and natural beauty. The people and their culture are fascinating.
