The MU International Center and the Department of English sponsor this summer Faculty-led study abroad program, hosted by the University of Manchester's Centre for New Writing in Manchester, United Kingdom. Professor Nancy West of the MU Department of English will accompany the students as the Faculty Program Director. The University of Manchester is at the heart of a dynamic and expanding city that attracts an increasing number of students, visitors, and businesses every year. Roughly the size of MU, The University of Manchester is the largest university in the UK, with a population of just over 27,000 students. The University's Centre for New Writing opened in 2007 and is home to programs in creative writing and contemporary literature. Students in the program will participate in excursions around the UK to places of literary importance. Immersed in the environment that has inspired the literature of classic and contemporary writers, students will appreciate the importance that the environment played in the authors' works, experiencing the same landscapes firsthand. Program datesJune 29 - July 23, 2010 FACULTY PROGRAM DIRECTOR(S)University of Missouri faculty member Dr. Nancy West, MU Department of English, will accompany the students to England. Professor West, winner of a 2004 Kemper award and two Gold Chalk awards, teaches the "Locating Literary England," a course that covers a range of authors whose work draws attention to the landscapes and peoples of the United Kingdom. Faculty-Led Programs enrich the study abroad experience as well as the MU campus by providing students opportunities to study other cultures and disciplines in depth while gaining new perspectives on our own society. Faculty leaders serve as mentors, role-models, and resources, as students explore their host institution and country. "This program is everything you'd want from such an experience, and more. Kemper award for Outstanding Teaching, Nancy West has taught at MU since 1995, where she has also received two Gold Chalk Awards for Excellence in Graduate Teaching and the inaugural EGSA award for Outstanding Graduate Faculty Member (2005). She has published articles in such journals as Narrative, Nineteenth Century Contexts, the Yale Journal of Criticism, Postscript, and the Yale Journal of Law and Humanities. She has also guest-edited a special collection of essays on photography and apocalypse for Genre. Her first book, Kodak and the Lens of Nostalgia, was published in 2000 by the University Press of Virginia. Her second book, Tabloid Inc.,: Crime, New, Narrative is about to come out with the Ohio State University Press this fall. She plans to do her third book project on Masterpiece Theater and the issue of intercultural film adaptation. ACADEMICSCourses
English 3118 - Locating Literary England (taught by MU Professor Nancy West). This course will cover a range of authors whose work draws attention to the landscapes and peoples of the United Kingdom. Although the scope of the reading is broad, the course will concentrate on two thematic areas: 1) representations of "the country and the city" and 2) literary tourism. Writers to be studied include such classic authors as William Wordsworth, Virginia Woolf, and Charles Dickens. English 4040 - Creative Writing Workshop (taught by University of Manchester faculty) - The second course is a creative writing workshop in which students will have the opportunity to write, read and discuss short stories and poetry. Academic creditStudents will enroll in two courses for a total of 6 credits. You will be enrolled in actual MU courses and your grades will calculate into your GPA when the credit transfers to MU. Although you are guaranteed to receive credit for successfully completed courses, you must work with your academic advisor(s) to obtain pre-approval as to how you might fulfill degree requirements. EligibilityThe MU summer in Manchester, United Kingdom is open to all undergraduates entering their Junior or Senior year, who have at least a GPA of 3.0 and an interest in literature and/or creative writing*. * Students are not required to have a creative writing background. EXCURSIONSStudents will travel with the group but they will have opportunities to explore some sites independently during their time abroad.

The University of Manchester is recognized as a top university all over the world. Started in 2007, the Centre for New Writing provides students the opportunity to improve their writing skills while immersed in the environment of literary England. The University of Manchester will arrange all student accommodation and land travel for the duration of the program. Accommodations and MealsStudents will live in centrally located, University of Manchester residence halls with most meals fully catered in University cafeterias. Host City and Surrounding Areas
Manchester is a booming city filled with theaters, museums, fine restaurants, and nightclubs. You can experience underground music in the Northern Quarter or take in plays at the historical Royal Exchange or Palace Theatres. The city itself has a population of nearly 450,000 people, though the larger area of "Greater Manchester" now has close to 3 million residents. You can also escape to the nearby picturesque Lake District to experience some of the world's most beautiful landscapes, or hop on a train and be in London in 2.5 hours. Haworth is associated with the famous literary family, the Brontės. The house where the Brontės grew up is located in Haworth and is now known as the Brontė Parsonage Museum. Visitors can take tours around the parsonage and the surrounding town and countryside that influenced the Brontės' impressive works. The Lake District is known as one of the most beautiful parts of England. The Lake District is a National Park that holds important historical, ecological, and literary importance for the country. FINANCESProgram CostsMU attempts to make the costs of studying abroad affordable. As a program participant, you will be charged MU Educational and Technology fees (for the corresponding number of credit hours), and the Program Fee (which includes accommodations, field trips, local transportation, some meals, HTH Health and Sickness Insurance/MEDEX, and administrative costs). You will need to budget extra funds for round trip airfare, extra travel, and personal expenses. Most financial aid that you normally receive for your classes at MU should apply to the cost of the program. Non-Residents will be billed for MU Non-Resident fees and are eligible for any Non-Resident scholarships. Additional grants, loans, or scholarships may be available to offset the extra costs incurred on this program. Please visit the MU Financial Aid Office for more information.
