() As you are no doubt are aware, there has been a great deal of media coverage of the H1N1 flu, sometimes referred to as the Swine Flu. Please be assured that the University of Missouri (MU) International Center, in conjunction with MU campus experts and US and international colleagues, is carefully monitoring this situation and the risks associated with this flu virus as it relates to international travel and students participating in MU study abroad programs. At this time, MU does not anticipate any interruption to study abroad programs during fall 2009, January Intersession, or academic year 2009-10. However, MU will continue to monitor the situation and notify students of any changes. As MU study abroad program participants prepare for their upcoming programs, we encourage students with on-going health concerns that may increase their risk for complications from the flu to consult their U.S. physician about their travel plans. In addition, all MU study abroad program participants are asked to follow instructions provided by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the World Health Organization (WHO), and the US Department of State’s information regarding travel abroad. For additional information about H1N1 Flu, please see:
We also want students and their families to be aware that airport staff in many countries where MU students study abroad are monitoring the health of arriving passengers. For detailed and factual information regarding screening measures for the H1N1 flu that MU students may be required to follow, please see the related announcement by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). In addition, students who exhibit fever or symptoms of respiratory illness, or who are suspected to have H1N1 flu based on screening, may be subject to quarantine, medical examination, a rapid flu test, and may be hospitalized and given medical treatment, if they test positive for H1N1 flu. While the MU International Center continues to monitor this situation, we currently do not believe there is cause for undue alarm. Our study abroad team is committed to supporting MU students in studying abroad and can be reached Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. - Noon and 1:00 - 5:00 p.m. at (573) 882-6007. For emergencies occurring outside of office hours, a Study Abroad team member can be reached 24/7 by calling the MU Police Department at: (573) 882-7201. Sincerely, |
