Contact your <a href=\"\/isss\/advising\/people\/\">international adviser<\/a> if you have questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"SSN\">Social Security card<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A Social Security card is required for all international students and scholars who will be employed during their time at Mizzou.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A Social Security number is a unique, nine-digit number issued by the U.S. Social Security administration. It facilitates the reporting of wages to the government and is required in order to work in the United States. It also serves as a national identification number for taxation and other purposes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>International student and scholars must <b>wait two full weeks<\/b> from their date of entry into the U.S. before applying for a Social Security card. Applications submitted earlier will be subject to an additional delay of six weeks to three months and will increase the time it takes to receive a Social Security number.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<section class=\"wp-block-mizzou-accordion miz-accordion\"><button type=\"button\" class=\"miz-button miz-accordion__button\" aria-expanded=\"false\" data-miz-expand=\"d5dd5056-e899-48ea-90a1-87256d2aa8d5\"><span>International students (F-1\/J-1)<\/span><\/button><div class=\"miz-accordion__content\" id=\"d5dd5056-e899-48ea-90a1-87256d2aa8d5\">\n<p>International students must be employed to apply for a Social Security card. If you do not have a job offer, you cannot apply for a Social Security number. In addition to the required documents listed in the application process, you must provide proof of on-campus employment:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Download, complete and have your employer sign the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/international.missouri.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2020\/05\/isss-ssn.pdf\">Social Security Employment Verification form<\/a>&nbsp;(digital\/electronic signatures are not valid).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Submit a&nbsp;request for a Social Security letter&nbsp;in <a href=\"https:\/\/mystatus.missouri.edu\/index.cfm?FuseAction=Security.AngLogin\">myStatus<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bring the signed employment verification letter to International Student and Scholar Services.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>ISSS will return the fully signed form to you.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The Social Security Administration provides more information about&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssa.gov\/pubs\/EN-05-10181.pdf\">Social Security numbers for international students<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section>\n\n\n\n<section class=\"wp-block-mizzou-accordion miz-accordion\"><button type=\"button\" class=\"miz-button miz-accordion__button\" aria-expanded=\"false\" data-miz-expand=\"4348701f-bf2c-4b13-9e3b-ee66b1ea3057\"><span>International scholars (J-1\/H-1B)<\/span><\/button><div class=\"miz-accordion__content\" id=\"4348701f-bf2c-4b13-9e3b-ee66b1ea3057\">\n<p>You do not need a Social Security number to begin employment with your Mizzou host department. Any departmental questions regarding this administrative process should be referred to International Student and Scholar Services.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section>\n\n\n\n<section class=\"wp-block-mizzou-accordion miz-accordion\"><button type=\"button\" class=\"miz-button miz-accordion__button\" aria-expanded=\"false\" data-miz-expand=\"905c6bb0-77c4-4ae2-ac4b-a55f9d40a459\"><span>Application process<\/span><\/button><div class=\"miz-accordion__content\" id=\"905c6bb0-77c4-4ae2-ac4b-a55f9d40a459\">\n<p>Required documents:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Passport<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/i94.cbp.dhs.gov\/\">I-94 record<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I-20\/DS-2019<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Completed application for a Social Security card&nbsp;(<a href=\"https:\/\/secure.ssa.gov\/ossnap\/public\/landingOSsnap\">online form<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssa.gov\/forms\/ss-5.pdf\">PDf form<\/a>)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Proof of on-campus employment (international students only)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You should <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssa.gov\/number-card\/request-number-first-time\">start an application online<\/a> and schedule an appointment to bring in your original documents. If you are unable to use the online service, call 866-563-9108 to schedule an appointment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Columbia Social Security office is located at 3402 Buttonwood Drive (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/eD2GgCXmFDB2\">map<\/a>).<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"license\">Driver&#8217;s license and nondriver ID card<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A driver&#8217;s license is required for anyone who plans to operate a motor vehicle on public roadways. If you have an international driver&#8217;s license (written in English), you may be able to use it to drive in the United States. However, if you plan to drive regularly or purchase a car, you should obtain a Missouri driver&#8217;s license. <a href=\"https:\/\/international.missouri.edu\/isss\/current-students\/travel\/\">Refer to the travel page<\/a> for information about required forms of identification for travel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<section class=\"wp-block-mizzou-accordion miz-accordion\"><button type=\"button\" class=\"miz-button miz-accordion__button\" aria-expanded=\"false\" data-miz-expand=\"578efc0f-6de9-48b7-8b33-025f9b666164\"><span>Instruction permit<\/span><\/button><div class=\"miz-accordion__content\" id=\"578efc0f-6de9-48b7-8b33-025f9b666164\">\n<p>Before you obtain a driver\u2019s license or learn to drive in the United States, you must have an instruction permit, also known as a learner\u2019s permit. To obtain this permit, you must pass a vision test and a written test about Missouri traffic rules.&nbsp;<strong>With a permit, you may drive only when an adult licensed driver is in the vehicle with you.<\/strong>&nbsp;For additional information about obtaining an instruction permit, including the information you will need to learn to pass the written test, please see the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/dor.mo.gov\/drivers\/dlguide\/\">Missouri Driver Guide<\/a>. You will take the tests at the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/xnwX22jAYeH2\">Missouri State Highway Patrol testing office<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section>\n\n\n\n<section class=\"wp-block-mizzou-accordion miz-accordion\"><button type=\"button\" class=\"miz-button miz-accordion__button\" aria-expanded=\"false\" data-miz-expand=\"0b6beb6a-a95b-4eba-a918-507b4536d361\"><span>Driver&#8217;s license<\/span><\/button><div class=\"miz-accordion__content\" id=\"0b6beb6a-a95b-4eba-a918-507b4536d361\">\n<p>After you have satisfied the requirements to graduate from an instruction permit, you can apply for a driver\u2019s license. You must pass vision, road sign and written tests, in addition to a driving test. For the driving test, you must provide a registered and insured vehicle in which to take the test. You will take the tests at the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/xnwX22jAYeH2\">Missouri State Highway Patrol testing office<\/a>. You must successfully pass all tests to obtain a driver\u2019s license.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are in nonimmigrant status, you will receive your license by mail in four to six weeks. If you have a driver\u2019s license from another state in the U.S., you should get a Missouri driver\u2019s license as soon as possible after moving here.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section>\n\n\n\n<section class=\"wp-block-mizzou-accordion miz-accordion\"><button type=\"button\" class=\"miz-button miz-accordion__button\" aria-expanded=\"false\" data-miz-expand=\"bb0bc578-1aeb-4ca5-a595-8a1c2568397e\"><span>Nondriver ID card<\/span><\/button><div class=\"miz-accordion__content\" id=\"bb0bc578-1aeb-4ca5-a595-8a1c2568397e\">\n<p>If you do not plan to drive, you can apply for a Missouri nondriver ID card. It is a government-issued photo ID that can be used as a primary form of identification in many situations (e.g., opening a bank account).
