It can be used for work, training or experience related to your field of study.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Note: <a href=\"\/isss\/sponsored-student-program\/program-overview\/\">International sponsored students<\/a> must get permission from their sponsoring agencies before considering Academic Training. If your DS-2019 was not issued by Mizzou, these instructions do not apply to you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Eligibility<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>J-1 student in good academic standing.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In the U.S. primarily to study rather than engage in training.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Have a specific employer with a specific description of the training opportunity related to your field.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Application process<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Obtain a letter from your prospective employer. The letter must include:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Job title<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Brief description of the goals and objectives of the training program (employment)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dates of employment<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Location of employment<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Number of hours per week<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Name and address of your training supervisor<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Review the employment letter with your academic adviser to discuss if this training is recommended. If so, your adviser will complete a recommendation in myStatus \u2014 you will request this as part of step 3.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Submit an Academic Training Approval request in <a href=\"https:\/\/mystatus.missouri.edu\/index.cfm?FuseAction=Security.AngLogin\">myStatus<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Your international student adviser will evaluate the program and decide whether it is appropriate. If so, your adviser will issue a new DS-2019 with Academic Training endorsement.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Things to remember<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You can apply for Academic Training any time before completion of your program of study, but may participate during or after your program.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You must have a job offer to apply and employment can be full- or part-time, though all Academic Training is authorized as full time, regardless of actual hours worked.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You can start working once Academic Training has been approved by your international student adviser and you have received an updated DS-2019 with academic training authorization.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You can change employers during your Academic Training; however, the training program must be recommended by your academic department and authorized by International Student and Scholar Services before you may switch employers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Timing tips<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Getting ready to graduate?<\/strong>&nbsp;Post-completion Academic Training must be authorized&nbsp;<strong>before<\/strong>&nbsp;your program end date (graduation). Your job must start within 30 days after completing your studies.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Academic Training has a maximum time limit.<\/strong>&nbsp;Any Academic Training used during your current or previous degree programs will be subtracted from the time remaining after graduation.<ul><li>Undergraduate, master&#8217;s and pre-doctoral Ph.D. students:&nbsp;18 months or the period of full course of study in the U.S., whichever is less.<\/li><\/ul>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Post-doctoral Ph.D. students:&nbsp;36 months or the period of full course of study in the U.S., whichever is less.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Academic Training is off-campus work authorization for J-1 students.
