This rule will impact&nbsp;the ability to change major or degree level, transfer or request&nbsp;additional&nbsp;time in the U.S. on F-1 and J-1 status. It will go into effect Sept. 15, 2026.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">International Student and Scholar Services continues to review the&nbsp;final rule and related resources to fully understand its impact on Mizzou\u2019s international community. The information on this website is meant to&nbsp;provide&nbsp;general guidance. If you have questions about your specific situation,&nbsp;\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/international.missouri.edu\/isss\/advising\/walkin-advising\/\">advising<\/a>\u202ffor international students and scholars&nbsp;is\u202favailable&nbsp;through\u202fin-person walk-ins or\u202fonline appointments.&nbsp;You can also contact\u202fan\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/international.missouri.edu\/isss\/advising\/people\/\">ISSS adviser<\/a>\u202fby email.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Published changes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Changes the admit until date (AUD) from duration of status (D\/S) to a fixed admission period.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>On Sept. 15, 2026, students and scholars previously admitted for D\/S will have your AUD adjusted to the program end date listed on your I-20\/DS-2019 or up to four years from the rule effective date plus grace period (Nov. 14, 2030, for F-1 students or Oct. 15, 2030, for J-1 students\/scholars), whichever is sooner. Your I-94 record will continue to show D\/S even though your AUD will change.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you enter or re-enter the U.S. on or after Sept. 15, 2026, you will receive a specific AUD on your I-94 record. This is likely to be your I-20\/DS-2019 program end date or up to four years from your program start date, whichever is sooner.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you need additional time beyond your AUD, you will need to apply to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services for an extension of stay. You may require an updated I-20\/DS-2019 from ISSS.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reduces the F-1 grace period from 60 days to 30 days.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>F-1 students who do not travel and re-enter the U.S. on or after Sept. 15, 2026, will keep their 60-day grace period upon completion of their degree program or approved work authorization.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There are no grace period changes for J-1 students\/scholars. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Limits on transfers for F-1 students.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Limits on changes in degree level.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Limits on changes to program objectives (changing\/adding majors).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sets 24-month lifetime limit on English language training.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Review the <a href=\"https:\/\/international.missouri.edu\/isss\/duration-of-status\/student-scholar-planning\/\">student and scholar planning page<\/a> for more details about these changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-right wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Updated 06-AUG-2026<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On July 17, a\u202fnew rule regarding duration of status\u202ffor F, J&nbsp;and I&nbsp;nonimmigrants was published in the Federal Register.
