J-1 scholars are short-term employees or visitors who can teach, lecture, study, observe, conduct research, consult, train or demonstrate special skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To bring a J-1 scholar to the Mizzou campus, International Student and Scholar Services must issue a Form DS-2019, required for the exchange visitor&#8217;s visa application. This process is initiated by the host department, following the steps outlined below. Prior to accessing myStatus, please confirm with the <a href=\"https:\/\/international.missouri.edu\/isss\/advising\/people\/\">international scholar team<\/a> that you have an active department admin profile in myStatus; otherwise, you will not be able to submit new sponsorships requests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You will need to submit:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Departmental admin and faculty member contact information<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Scholar&#8217;s name and contact information<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Scholar&#8217;s current immigration status, if in the U.S.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>For scholars who are transferring their J-1 record to Mizzou, please request a copy of the scholar&#8217;s current DS-2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An international scholar adviser will review the request, determine the eligibility of the scholar and process the request for J-1 status. The department will be notified of next steps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 2: Host department submits documentation<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Once the host department has been notified that the request is eligible for J-1 status, and the department must provide the following information and <a href=\"https:\/\/mystatus.missouri.edu\/_customtags\/ct_FileRetrieve.cfm?File_ID=84438\">documentation<\/a>. This information is used to create the document the scholar will use to apply for their visa (Form DS-2019), so please ensure it is accurate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Complete the department and exchange visitor tabs in myStatus<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Copy of J-1 scholar passport bio page <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/mystatus.missouri.edu\/_customtags\/ct_FileRetrieve.cfm?File_ID=72746\">J-1 Scholar Program Agreement<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/mystatus.missouri.edu\/_customtags\/ct_FileRetrieve.cfm?File_ID=69144\">J-1 Scholar Fee Form<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Proof of English language proficiency (one of the following, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=PPM2BLarEIQ\">learn more about this requirement<\/a>):\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Results from a recognized English language test<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Signed documentation from an academic institution or English language school<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/mystatus.missouri.edu\/_customtags\/ct_FileRetrieve.cfm?File_ID=69190\">Documented interview<\/a> conducted by host department either in person or by phone\/video conference<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Scholar&#8217;s r\u00e9sum\u00e9 or curriculum vitae<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If host department is providing financial support: Letter of offer<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If host department is not providing financial support: Letter of invitation (refer to sample letter below) and proof of funding\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Proof of funding must show at least $1,500 per month for the scholar, with an additional $800 for a spouse and $500 for each child if applicable. The financial document must show the scholar&#8217;s full name in English. If the financial support is provided by someone other than the scholar, a completed <a href=\"https:\/\/international.missouri.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2026\/02\/Affidavit-of-support.pdf\">affidavit of support<\/a> is also required.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Note: If the scholar&#8217;s spouse or children intend to travel to Mizzou with the scholar, the scholar must provide the family member&#8217;s biographical information (birth date, city and country of birth, relationship to scholar, email address).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a class=\"miz-button miz-button--primary miz-button--brand\" href=\"https:\/\/mystatus.missouri.edu\/index.cfm?FuseAction=Security.AngLogin\">Log in to myStatus<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<section class=\"wp-block-mizzou-accordion miz-accordion\"><button type=\"button\" class=\"miz-button miz-accordion__button\" aria-expanded=\"false\" data-miz-expand=\"853cb807-8aa5-4976-801e-28970a37c056\"><span>Sample J-1 scholar letter of invitation<\/span><\/button><div class=\"miz-accordion__content\" id=\"853cb807-8aa5-4976-801e-28970a37c056\">\n<p>Dear Dr. [<strong>name of scholar<\/strong>]\n\n\n\n<p>In my capacity as [<strong>your title<\/strong>] at the University of Missouri in Columbia, I would like to extend to you an invitation to be a visiting [<strong>professor\/research scholar\/short-term scholar<\/strong>] in the [<strong>MU academic unit<\/strong>] for the period of [<strong>estimated start date<\/strong>] to [<strong>estimated end date<\/strong>].<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While at MU, you will be conducting collaborative research on [<strong>topic of research<\/strong>] with me [and <strong>name of co-researcher<\/strong> [if applicable]]. In addition, there may be opportunities for you to share your experiences with our graduate students in a classroom setting [and interact with faculty members [if applicable]].<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The university, college or department will not be paying you a salary. However, we will be happy to provide you with [e.g., <strong>a stipend in the amount of $\/adequate workspace\/access to computers\/laboratory access\/technical support\/administrative support\/other as applicable<\/strong>]. In this regard, it is my understanding that you will cover your expenses while at MU with your person funds in the amount of $[<strong>amount of funds<\/strong>].<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, as a participant in the J-1 exchange visitor program, you will be expected to comply with the U.S. Department of State\u2019s accident and sickness insurance requirements throughout your stay. You may choose your own insurance provider or elect to enroll in the MU health insurance program for visiting scholars. Information regarding insurance is enclosed with this letter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sincerely,<\/p>\n\n\n\n[<strong>Hosting PI signature required<\/strong>]\n\n\n\n[<strong>Department chair signature required<\/strong>]\n<\/div><\/section>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 3: International Student and Scholar Services produces DS-2019<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>An international scholar adviser will review the request and prepare the DS-2019.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>ISSS emails the DS-2019 and steps for scheduling a visa appointment to the scholar and host department directly. This email also includes a pre-arrival checklist and <a href=\"https:\/\/international.missouri.edu\/isss\/employees-visitors\/j-1-scholars\/health-insurance\/\">medical insurance information<\/a>. \n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>DS-2019s are now issued electronically \u2014 no paper copies need to be picked up or mailed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Upon arrival to Mizzou, the J-1 scholar will receive credentials to log in to myStatus, where they will be able to access the J-1 scholar portal.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"extension\">Extending a J-1 program<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If a visiting scholar&#8217;s DS-2019 will expire soon and the host department plans to extend their stay, a request for extension should be made to International Student and Scholar Services. At the top of the page, select &#8220;Extend program.&#8221; Enter the financial information for the new time period. The host department will also need to upload the following documents:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/mystatus.missouri.edu\/_customtags\/ct_FileRetrieve.cfm?File_ID=69144\">J-1 Scholar Fee Form<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If host department is providing financial support: Letter of offer<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If host department is not providing financial support: Letter of invitation (<a href=\"https:\/\/international.missouri.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2024\/10\/sample_j1-scholar-invite-letter.doc\">sample<\/a>) and proof of funding<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><a class=\"miz-button miz-button--primary miz-button--brand\" href=\"https:\/\/mystatus.missouri.edu\/index.cfm?FuseAction=Security.AngLogin\">Log in to myStatus<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 2: International Student and Scholar Services updates DS-2019<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Allow eight business days for the request to be processed after it is submitted.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The updated DS-2019 will be emailed directly to the scholar.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/section>\n\n\n\n<section class=\"wp-block-mizzou-accordion miz-accordion\"><button type=\"button\" class=\"miz-button miz-accordion__button\" aria-expanded=\"false\" data-miz-expand=\"76aa4781-a772-41d9-ab8d-e09a119153a3\"><span>Things to remember<\/span><\/button><div class=\"miz-accordion__content\" id=\"76aa4781-a772-41d9-ab8d-e09a119153a3\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>J-1 research scholars may remain in J status in the United States for&nbsp;<strong>no longer than five years<\/strong>. If the scholar has transferred from another U.S. institution, the time at that institution counts as part of the total five years.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>All J visa holders are required to have&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/international.missouri.edu\/isss\/employees-visitors\/j-1-scholars\/health-insurance\/\">health insurance<\/a>&nbsp;for the entire time they are in J status. This includes all J-2 dependents. The insurance must meet U.S. Department of State requirements and is required by law. Not having health insurance causes the scholar to be in violation of the J status.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The J-1 scholar\u2019s passport must be valid for at least six months past the start date of the requested extension.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>More information is available on the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/j1visa.state.gov\/\">Department of State website<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/section>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>J-1 scholars come to Mizzou through the Exchange Visitor Program.
