Within the context of this course, you will connect readings on global health, justice and social programs with fieldwork, and explore the way narratives and storytelling influence and determine policy, the meaning of a national identity in a civil society and national pride. The question asked is: What is Costa Rica’s story of another way? Site visits will likely include:

  • Rahab (NGO for sex workers)
  • Maria Auxiliadora (NGO for impoverished elders and children)
  • Women’s clinic
  • Correctional facility
  • Inter-American Court of Human Rights
  • Artisan cooperative representing 25 indigenous communities of Costa Rica

After this program, you will be able to:

  • Demonstrate your understanding of civil society
  • Recognize the distinctive viewpoints of Costa Rica’s story of another way
  • Understand the basic concepts of human rights and social justice
  • Identify the strategies by which government and civil society seek to address the social determinants of health and justice in Costa Rica
  • Recognize how stories serve as prevalent forms of communication in private and public discourse

Academic requirements

While Mizzou Study Abroad understands that your social and cultural experiences abroad are an important part of the study abroad experience, you should remember that this is an academic program. You must abide by all academic policies and procedures as stated and interpreted by the University of Missouri and your host organization. Class attendance, including all scheduled excursions and activities, is mandatory; grades will be lowered and students can be dismissed from the program for intentional, as well as excessive, absences.
