Safety
South Korea is a safe country that welcomes millions of tourists each year. Nevertheless, you should be aware of your surroundings and exercise caution as you would anywhere. Popular tourist destinations are often targets of petty theft. Do not leave your bags unattended or be flashy with electronics or cash. Using good judgment and following basic safety precautions will discourage potential thieves from viewing you as an easy target.
Seoul, in general, is a safe city except when it comes to traffic. Drivers tend to be impatient and in a hurry, including bus drivers, and they routinely run red lights. Always use crosswalks and only cross streets when the light is green to pedestrians.
In-country emergency numbers:
- Fire and ambulance: 119
- Police: 112
- Medical information (for foreigners): 1339
Health
You should follow basic health and wellness practices while you are in South Korea. The water in Korea is safe to drink. Most travelers do not need to take special precautions beyond what they do at home. Review additional health information for travelers to South Korea.
