I had just turned in my final assignment for PEA_ST 4005 \u2014 a reflection on my study abroad program to Costa Rica. The paper marked the end of an exciting learning experience, but one not soon to be forgotten. <a href=\"https:\/\/mystudyabroad.missouri.edu\/index.cfm?FuseAction=Programs.ViewProgram&amp;Program_ID=11132\">Social Justice, Human Rights and Narratives in Costa Rica<\/a> provided a deep-dive into Costa Rica\u2019s \u201calternative way.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52700985907_e944edef13_c.jpg\" alt=\"A colorful begininng of basket-weaving at the Chieton Moren Indigenous Organization in San Jose\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Basket-weaving at the Chieton Moren Indigenous Organization<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"E68\">Social reform has been foundational to the development of modern Costa Rica. Through a variety of diverse lenses, we explored the Costa Rican healthcare system, environmental conservation efforts and commitment to human rights and international cooperation \u2014 including their demilitarization (Costa Rica is one of only three countries to undergo this process).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"E72\">Along with some peace studies and public health students from the University of Missouri, I was able to volunteer at Hogar Infantil Curridabat (a children\u2019s home), Refugio de Esperanza (a migrant shelter), Costa Rica Animal Rescue Center and ACJ-Ana Frank Daycare Center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52701995768_c1808ee8bb_c.jpg\" alt=\"A gate around a hospital for exotic and wild animals at the Costa Rica Animal Rescue Center in Turr\u00facares\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Animal hospital for exotic and wild animals<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"E77\">We also visited La Carpio (an impoverished, majority-immigrant community) \/ SIFAIS (a local development project), Chieton Moren Indigenous Organization (an artist cooperative), Maria Auxiliadora Organization and Free Clinic (with a women\u2019s shelter and school), the InterAmerican Court for Human Rights and La Reforma (a low-security prison).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52701506551_982464a848_c.jpg\" alt=\"A white sign reading &quot;Refugio de Esperanza&quot; (translated: Refuge of Hope) in San Jose\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Refuge of Hope sign in San Jose<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"E83\">We listened to countless personal stories and witnessed solution-driven efforts to address universal issues.
