The city, which used to be the Spanish capital of the Roman Empire, was a treasure trove of Roman history. During our visit, we saw the former Roman amphitheater and learned about the history of the fights that used to take place there. Alongside the blood baths of the gladiator fights, I was surprised to learn that there were often comedy shows held there too, which featured dachshunds that would do tricks for an adoring audience.

Roman amphitheater

While there I also learned more about modern Spanish culture and I got to try the “menu del dia,” which is a three course meal for around €20. My three courses were all unique to the region. I started with a Mediterranean salad full of olives. Then I had an “Iberian steak” with “patatas bravas” on the side. Finally, the meal was finished with a “Catalan creme,” a dessert that resembled creme brulee that is unique to the region of Catalonia (which both Barcelona and Tarragona reside within). This three-day adventure taught me that it is really important to learn about the culture and history of the region you are studying in, as it allows you to engage more fully and meaningfully.

Mediterranean salad

Iberian steak

Catalan creme

Learn more about this blogger’s study abroad program: IES Abroad: Political Science and International Relations in Barcelona

About seven days into my study abroad journey to Barcelona, my program took me on an all-expenses paid trip to Tarragona!
