Hikone is a smaller city on the shores of Lake Biwa, Japan’s largest lake. It’s home to one of 12 original castles from the Edo period and is full of the kindest people and the prettiest views. The mountains surrounding it are gorgeous, and every day feels so full of new opportunities.

The view from the back of my apartment of Lake Biwa.

Since coming to Hikone, I’ve had the pleasure of meeting lifelong friends, and exploring tons of local shrines. Some of my favorite moments have been when I’ve found shrines or temples just by going on walks around town, as they’re everywhere. The amount of history and culture here is so apparent and visible in many aspects of everyday life.

Chiyo-ji, one of the local shrines of Hikone.

The peers on the program have become my favorite travel buddies and are always down for an adventure. Through exchange programs and interactions at the local university, we’ve met some great Japanese friends as well. In Hikone, you’re never far from great food and great sights. It’s a small town, but jam-packed with culture and fun things to do, and I’m so grateful for the opportunity to live here!

Part of Taga Taisha shrine, where I went for the Setsubun festival that celebrates the day before the first day of spring in the old Japan calendar.

Learn more about this blogger’s study abroad program: Japan Center for Michigan Universities

Since arriving in Hikone earlier this year, my life has been so full of new experiences and great friendships.
