I recently had a four-day weekend and decided to use that to visit the capital, and I’m so glad I did. I’ve always loved metropolitan environments and Tokyo didn’t disappoint. Full of culture, modern feats of architecture and a vibrant nightlife, there’s something for everyone. While there, my friends and I hit some major landmarks, among which were Tokyo Tower, Tokyo Skytree, Sensonji and Meiji Jingu. From the Skytree at night, you get an expansive view of the entire city, and it’s incredible to witness. Sensoji is Tokyo’s oldest established Buddhist temple, opening in A.D. 645. The surrounding area of Asakusa is lively, with shops leading up to its iconic gates. While walking around, I even saw some cherry blossoms! The season just started and I was very glad to have gotten the chance to view them.

Tokyo Skytree, the world’s current tallest tower.

The first gate of Senso-ji, Tokyo’s oldest established Buddhist temple.

It wouldn’t be Tokyo without the anime, gaming and fan culture either. Visiting Akihabara, there are five-story figure shops and many themed cafes. The streets are bustling with collectors and it’s so much fun to wander around and get lost. If you’re looking for more shopping, Shinjuku and Shibuya are a short train ride away, with tons of stores and vibrant nightlife. Walking around the famous Shibuya Crossing at night was so much fun, with so many people there. Tokyo is truly a cultural hub, and not just for Japanese culture. Walking around, I heard so many different languages and saw so many different people. There’s always something to do, you can never be bored. Whether it’s climbing a famous radio tower, walking around centuries-old shrines or going exploring at night, Tokyo has something for everyone.

Shinjuku at night.

Learn more about this blogger’s study abroad program: Japan Center for Michigan Universities

Although I’ve spent a great deal of time in Japan so far, I still hadn’t visited Tokyo.
