This summer, I have the amazing opportunity to complete a six-week international internship in London through Mizzou. I\u2019m currently working at Minervate Consultancy, a U.K.-based company dedicated to supporting pharmaceutical, biotechnology and medical device companies in optimizing their drug development processes. Their mission to accelerate clinical trials through AI-driven tools and become a leader in the electronic data capture space has given me a front-row seat to innovation in global health care. As a business development intern, I\u2019ve gained valuable experience in client outreach, CRM management and sales strategy \u2014 skills that I know will serve me well in my future career. One of the most rewarding parts of this experience has been observing and adapting to the cultural differences between the U.K. and U.S. workplace environments. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In London, I\u2019ve found the work culture to be a bit more formal in communication, especially in emails and meetings. Phrases like \u201cKind regards\u201d and \u201cWould you be so kind\u2026\u201d are used frequently, and there\u2019s an emphasis on politeness and professionalism, even in casual conversations. Compared to the more direct and informal style often used in the U.S., it took a bit of adjustment, but I\u2019ve grown to appreciate the courtesy and clarity it brings to daily interactions. Another noticeable difference is the work-life balance. At Minervate, taking breaks and ending the workday on time is valued and encouraged. People here are efficient and focused during working hours, but they also understand the importance of stepping away and recharging. I\u2019ve learned that productivity doesn\u2019t always mean staying late or skipping lunch, it can also mean knowing when to pause and return with a fresh perspective. This mindset has made my experience feel both productive and sustainable, and it\u2019s a lesson I\u2019ll carry with me long after I return home. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Interning abroad has not only expanded my professional skills but also deepened my understanding of how workplace culture shapes communication and collaboration. I\u2019m grateful to have received a study abroad scholarship to help make this opportunity possible and would absolutely recommend it to other Mizzou students considering international experiences. Living and working in London has been both eye-opening and inspiring, and I\u2019m excited to apply what I\u2019ve learned back in the States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
