Living in Siena, I quickly found myself embraced by the warmth of its close-knit community and swept into the heart of its traditions, especially the Palio. From contrada dinners and trial races to parades and neighborhood celebrations, I had the opportunity to experience Sienese culture firsthand while building genuine connections with locals.

Communication felt different here, less about direct language and more about reading tone, gestures, and shared context. These subtle differences taught me to be more observant, patient and open-minded, helping me become not just a better communicator, but a more empathetic person. The slower pace of life in Siena also pushed me to reevaluate how I viewed time, learning to embrace long meals, spontaneous plans, and meaningful conversations. It wasn’t always easy, there were moments of culture shock and discomfort, but through it all, I found that being present, staying curious and stepping outside of my comfort zone made all the difference. From day trips to Florence and cooking classes to free weekends spent exploring new cities, every experience was a reminder of how much there is to gain from letting go of expectations and fully immersing yourself. If you’re considering studying abroad, I can’t recommend this program enough. Come with an open heart, and maybe pack a little lighter than I did!

The Piazza del Campo: the heart of Siena and where the iconic Palio race takes place.

An authentic Italian charcuterie board I tried on my first day!

Me on the streets of the Contrada della Pantera in Siena.

A highlight of visiting Cinque Terre, taking a boat and touring the 5 cities.

A very fun group picnic night, hosted by IES Abroad.

Learn more about this blogger’s study abroad program: Communication and Culture in Tuscany

Studying abroad through the Mizzou Communication and Culture in Tuscany program was more than just a chance to explore a new place, it was a journey of personal growth and cultural immersion.
