This past month, I have been studying Spanish in the city of Oviedo, Spain. It is located in the Asturias region and has a rich history and unique culture. I have so many highlights from my month here, but my favorite experience would have to be visiting the Picos de Europa mountains. These mountains span across the regions of Asturias, Cantabria and Le\u00f3n and were formed by glaciers dating back 300 million years. Situated in Picos de Europa are two famous lakes: Enol and Ercina, more commonly called the Lagos de Covadonga.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to the natural beauty in this mountain range, the peaks are filled with different types of animals. There is the Cantabrian bear, the Iberian wolf, many different types of birds and small animals, and my favorites, cows, sheep and goats. Walking through the mountains, you will hear the cowbells ringing all around you. The milk from these animals is used to make different types of artisanal cheeses, one of the most famous being Gamone\u00fa. This cheese is very popular in Asturias, but is very strong, so I wouldn\u2019t recommend it if you are a picky eater like me! However, if you\u2019re feeling adventurous, some people find it delicious!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Furthermore, the Picos de Europa are also home to ancient towns and important landmarks. We had the opportunity to visit the town of Cangas de On\u00eds, which was the first capital of Asturias and is home to the historical Roman bridge. This bridge is perfectly preserved and is even more beautiful in person than it is in photos! Cangas de On\u00eds also houses the church of Santa Cruz, which is said to be one of the first Christian churches after the Muslim invasion. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We also visited the Basilica de Santa Mar\u00eda de Covadonga. Here, there is a cave that was said to be the location of a vision of Santa Mar\u00eda during a battle of the Spanish against the Moors. In this cave, there is also a fountain with seven spouts, and it is said that if you drink this water, you will get married within the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Throughout these experiences I have learned so much about the Picos de Europa mountains. They hold such a rich history that it is a place you must visit if you go to Spain. It was one of the coolest experiences I have ever had! I would definitely go again. I am so sad to leave Spain, but I hope to come back one day and visit even more places like this!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
