This gallery is home to thousands of paintings and sculptures from the Italian Renaissance. The gallery was built in the 16th century and was originally used for government offices. Later, it became a home for the art collections of the Medici family. It was officially opened to the public in 1769 and was officially named a museum in 1865. The most well-known piece of art in the gallery is “The Birth of Venus” by Sandro Botticelli. The painting was completed in 1484 and depicts Venus, the Roman goddess of love and beauty, emerging from the sea and being carried to shore by the wind gods Zephyr and Aura. I got to see this famous painting with my own eyes in the gallery, and I was very impressed by its size and beauty.

“The Birth of Venus” painting by Botticelli

Learn more about this blogger’s study abroad program: Florence University of the Arts

I visited the Uffizi Art Gallery in the city center of Florence, Italy.
