I have been in Barcelona for just over a month now, and during these past few weeks I have already had the opportunity to experience many major events and holidays. My favorite part of studying abroad so far has been learning about local traditions and getting to be a part of them. Earlier this month, Pope Leo XIV visited Barcelona and celebrated Mass at the Sagrada Familia. We took the opportunity to head to the nearby area and see the Pope along the parade route before the Mass. Every street in the area was packed with people, and it was truly the largest crowd I have ever seen. However, it was worth it to experience such a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
This month also marked the start of the World Cup! I had never really watched a game or followed the World Cup before, but everyone in the city is so invested in it that I had to learn more. Barcelona is a very diverse city, so it has been interesting to hear people support different teams from all over the world. We have gone out to watch a few of the games on TV in the evenings, and the atmosphere never disappoints. The fans here are passionate no matter which team they are cheering for. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
This week, Barcelona also celebrated Sant Joan! Sant Joan is a holiday that celebrates both the arrival of summer and the birth of Saint John the Baptist. The eve of Sant Joan is spent at the beach all night long. All of the beaches are crowded with people, fireworks, and bonfires. Many enjoy the celebrations until sunrise before the bank holiday the next day to reset. Overall, experiencing these events has given me a much deeper understanding of Barcelona’s culture. I have had the opportunity to experience so much in just these first few weeks, and I cannot wait to see what the rest of the program will bring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
