Marching Mizzou had the wonderful opportunity to travel to London for London Band Week. There were three bands from America invited: Marching Mizzou, University of South Carolina, and Pennsylvania\u2019s Liberty High School. Alongside us there were many bands from the U.K. who also performed. Marching Mizzou had four performances during our week in London, but it was what happened outside the performances that made the experience so memorable. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

You might have heard of the record breaking heatwave that London experienced, this was the exact time that London Band Week was taking place. The highest temperature ended up being 36.4\u00b0C, 97.5\u00b0F, on June 25 and heat like that kept up all week. That doesn\u2019t sound too different from what we experience here in Missouri; however, the majority of buildings in London don\u2019t have air conditioning. Many buildings are designed to keep in the heat because cooler weather is more common there, so when heat comes around it\u2019s a little harder to deal with. London Band Week staff made sure that Marching Mizzou remained hydrated all week and I am very grateful to them for helping us the whole time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Regardless of the heat, there were many fun things planned for us to experience such as seeing Buckingham Palace, touring the Tower of London to see the crown jewels, and walking through Windsor Castle and seeing many beautiful paintings and sculptures. To get around the city, each member of Marching Mizzou was given an Oyster card that allowed us to take the Tube, also known as the London Underground. It was fun to take trains all around the city and see how locals maneuvered through the stations with such ease. Even children coming home from school were a lot better at navigating than I was. Google Maps was my best friend when it came to knowing what stations were right and which stops to get off at. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now for what we came to London to do. Perform. Our first performance was Live in London, which kicked off the whole week. We performed right next to the London Bridge for a crowd lined up on the sidewalk. The space was a little tight for the amount of people we had, but we made it work and had a great time. We played our music from our pregame and old halftime shows at Mizzou football games as well as some cadences from our wonderful drumline. Our second performance was the London Tattoo inside the ExCel convention center (which had AC!). We played in the opening ceremony with the University of South Carolina, played some past halftime music during our individual performance, and had the honor to be the last band to play during the closing ceremony, where about six bands from the U.K. joined us. The next day we got to participate in a parade that went past Buckingham Palace and through the streets of London. Directly afterward, a drumline battle was held where, you\u2019ll be happy to hear, our drumline won! Both performing and seeing the sights in London was so much fun. I am so glad we got invited to be part of London Band Week this year and I\u2019m excited to see what\u2019s in store for Marching Mizzou in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
