Vienna is known for its many must-try pastries and cakes that are sought out by most who visit the city! Vienna has a rich coffeehouse history, that prides itself on being a place of elegance to enjoy a Melange and a slice of torte (cake). I find myself still dreaming of a warm Apfelstrudel, or apple strudel. Usually served with a side of vanilla ice cream and some whipped cream, this is layered pastry filled with warm apples and cinnamon. You can order an Apfelstrudel at almost any restaurant in Vienna, and be prepared for wanting more!

Warm Apfelstrudel at Haus des Meeres

Another iconic symbol of Vienna’s old imperial court is the Sachertorte. This is a rich chocolate cake that dates back to the early 1800’s, once enjoyed by Viennese emperors and empresses. The best part of this cake, is the delicious layer of apricot filling that cuts the rich chocolate flavor, as Austria is known for its apricot production! There is so much history behind what seems like such a simple piece of cake, and there is a huge debate over which cafe can lay claim to it. I decided to try my Sachertorte at the Cafe Demel, home of the “real” Sachertorte, rather than at Cafe Sacher which claims the “original” recipe. I may be biased, but skipping the long lines at Sacher for Demel may be worth the detour!

Sachertorte at the Imperial Cafe Demel

Learn more about this blogger’s study abroad program: IES Abroad: Summer Psychology in Vienna

As I readjust to life here in the U.S., I cannot help myself from reminiscing on all the delicious sweets and treats I had during my time in Vienna, Austria!
