Buddhism was introduced to Japan in the sixth century and became an important part of Japanese society, influencing art, architecture, philosophy and everyday life. Over time, temples became places for worship, learning, community and reflection. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-photo is-provider-flickr wp-block-embed-flickr\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/2swh8tr\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55476610323_5ccfb2c197_z.jpg\" alt=\"Kiyomizu-dera\" width=\"480\" height=\"640\" \/><\/a>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Kiyomizu-dera<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their gardens, courtyards and buildings also show the strong connection between Japanese architecture and nature. Visiting these historic spaces has given me a new appreciation for how architecture can preserve and communicate history. From large temples like T\u014ddai-ji in Nara to smaller neighborhood temples, each space tells a story through its materials, layout, and relationship to its surroundings. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-photo is-provider-flickr wp-block-embed-flickr\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/2swhsK8\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55476675149_34a8a759f3_z.jpg\" alt=\"Kiyomizu-dera-1\" width=\"480\" height=\"640\" \/><\/a>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Kiyomizu-dera<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many temples have been rebuilt or restored over generations, allowing traditional architectural practices to continue while preserving their cultural significance. As an architecture student studying abroad in Japan, experiencing these places firsthand has helped me understand how architecture can create a connection to both history and place. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-photo is-provider-flickr wp-block-embed-flickr\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/2swgxMm\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55476496986_4ddd19931f_z.jpg\" alt=\"Ginkaku-ji\" width=\"480\" height=\"640\" \/><\/a>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Ginkaku-ji<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Walking through these spaces and seeing how people interact with them has shown me that their importance goes beyond their physical beauty.
