Travel information
Apply for a passport
If you haven’t already applied for a passport, you should do so immediately. Make sure that your passport is valid for at least six months beyond the end date of your program. You can apply for a passport at the International Center — call 573-882-6007 to make an appointment.
Visa information
A visa is your official permission to enter a specific country and is granted by that country’s government. If you plan to travel outside your host country while abroad, be sure to check the entry regulations for any country you plan to visit. Some countries will require you to obtain a visa just to enter the country, regardless of the purpose or length of your visit.
The information in this section is subject to change without warning and at the discretion of the government of Israel. Although obtaining the appropriate student visa is the responsibility of each student, Mizzou Study Abroad attempts to provide students with the most current information available regarding the visa process. It is your responsibility to confirm all requirements with the Israeli government.
If you are not traveling abroad on a U.S. passport, you must:
- Notify your program leader and study abroad adviser.
- Determine if a visa is required for your study abroad program.
For specific information about visa requirements, go to the consular or embassy website for Israel. Applying for a visa can take several weeks, so start the process early. Remember that the presentation of a visa application does not guarantee the insurance of a visa. It is your responsibility to determine if you need a visa for this program and then take appropriate action.
Summer students
U.S. citizens studying in Israel for three months or less may enter Israel on a tourist visa. The tourist visa is issued free of charge upon arrival at the airport.
Semester/academic year students
U.S. citizens studying in Israel for more than three months must obtain an A/2 student visa from the Israeli consulate prior to departure. The A/2 student visa is a multiple-entry visa, which makes it possible to travel outside of Israel and return without requiring a new visa, and is valid for up to one year. Recipients of this visa are not permitted to work in Israel.
You must appear in person at the Israeli consulate to apply for a student visa. The following items must be submitted upon application:
- Passport, valid for at least two years
- Acceptance letter from host university
- Visa application form, in duplicate with one photograph attached to each copy
- Proof of sufficient funds to cover tuition and living expenses
- For students under age 18, a notarized declaration signed by both parents
Arrival information
Hebrew University of Jerusalem and Tel Aviv University both follow the traditional, semester-based academic calendar.
